OKLAHOMA CITY, OK�€"Maria Villaroel scored a game-high
20 points and No. 21 Oklahoma owned a 68-23 rebounding edge in a
90-42 victory over Oral Roberts in the season-opening Bertha Teague
Classic, Saturday at the Ford Center.
ORU
(0-1) led or was tied for much of the first half. Elisha Turek's (Council
Bluffs, Iowa) bucket at 17:25 gave ORU a 6-4 lead, and the Golden
Eagles extended that advantage to 12-8 on a short jumper by Jessica
Boan with 13:45 left in the half.
But
with the game tied at 16 all with 6:57 to play, the Sooners (1-0)
closed the half with a 19-7 run for a 35-23 halftime lead.
ORU
then went scoreless for better than five minutes to start the
second half, giving Oklahoma the opportunity to extend the lead to
53-23 before Turek's basket at 14:45 broke ORU's drought and made
it 53-25. OU, though, coasted the rest of the way.
The
Golden Eagles were limited to 30.9 percent shooting for the game,
including 21.4 percent in the second half. Oklahoma, meanwhile,
shot 42.5 percent for the game.
Turek,
a freshman forward, led ORU with nine points and seven rebounds,
earning game MVP honors. Jessica Boan (Overland
Park, Kan.) and Maureen Obudho (Mombassa,
Kenya) each scored eight points, and Leah Cannon (Adelaide,
Australia) had six points and seven assists.
Caton
Hill had 17 for the Sooners, while Krista Sanchez chipped in with
13 points.
The
Golden Eagles open the home portion of their 2003-04 schedule when
they host Texas-Arlington, 7:05 p.m., Tuesday, November 26 at the
Mabee Center.
