The Oral Roberts University volleyball team rallied to defeat
2002 Southland Conference Champion and tournament host
Texas-Arlington 3-1 (16-30, 30-20, 30-27, 31-29) Saturday afternoon
at the University of Texas-Arlington LaQuinta Invitational. Later
in the afternoon, ORU came up short as Arkansas-Little Rock slid
past the Golden Eagles 3-0 (30-23, 30-27, 30-28).
In ORU's first match, the Golden Eagles quickly fell behind
Texas-Arlington by losing the first game 16-30. However, the next
three belonged to the young ORU squad.
Leading the way was freshman outside hitter Ori Zuzic. Zuzic
unleashed a staggering 62 attacks, 24 of which landed as kills.
Freshman outside hitter Cris Alves contributed a double-double with
11 kills and 11 digs. Junior outside hitter Becky Brunelle
displayed a triple-double of sorts with 14 kills, 15 digs, and 11
attack errors. Junior libero extraordinaire Becky Dreher defended
ORU's side of the court with 25 digs, while freshman setter Maura
Cicala tossed up 50 assists.
Against UALR, ORU was once again led by outside hitter Ori Zuzic
with her 18 kills. Freshmen Maura Cicala and Brittany Arnold shared
setting duties as both had 21 assists.
ORU's record now stands at 2-4. ORU returns to the court Wednesday
evening at 7:00 when the Golden Eagles visit the Kansas
Jayhawks.
