TULSA--Western Illinois limited Oral
Roberts to one field goal in the first 14 minutes of the second
half as the Westerwinds rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit
for a 54-45 Mid-Continent Conference win over ORU, Monday at the
Mabee Center.
Zane Teilane led WIU (9-5, 3-0) with
23 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. The 6-foot-7 Teilane had 15
points and eight rebounds in the second half when the Westerwinds
shot 48.4 percent (15-31) from the field.
ORU (8-7, 2-2) used some tough
defense of its own for a 28-21 halftime lead. Down 18-10, the
Golden Eagles closed the half with an 18-3 run over the final 5:46
as Western went 1-for-5 from the field with four turnovers in that
span.
But Western's defense stymied ORU in
the second half, limiting the Golden Eagles to 23.1 percent
shooting in the game's final 20 minutes, and 28.3 percent shooting
in the second half.
Elisha Turek
(Council Bluffs, IA) led ORU with 18 points and eight rebounds,
shooting 7-of-16 from the field including 3-of-4 from 3-point
range. Alycia Seay (Big Cabin, OK) had 11 points
and eight rebounds and Claudia Louis (Baton Rouge,
LA) chipped in with 10 points and six boards. Leah
Cannon (Adelaide, Australia) had nine assists and four
steals.
The Golden Eagles return to action
when they visit Mid-Con foe Chicago State, 1 p.m., Saturday.
