four free throws in the final 15 seconds as the Kangaroos rallied
for a 60-56 win over Oral Roberts 60-56 in the Mid-Continent
Conference opener for both teams, Saturday at Swinney Recreation Center.
The Golden Eagles led most
of the second half, trailing only once at 49-48 with 4:55 to. ORU took a 56-54
lead with 58 seconds remaining, but UMKC's Carlai Moore tied it at
56-56 on a short jumper with 34 seconds left.
Leah Cannon (Adelaide, Australia) then missed a shot
for the lead and Erin Pauk wne to the line on the other end and
made both for a 58-56 lead with 15 seconds left.
ORU (6-6, 0-1) played its
second game without injured guards Cori Williston
(Tulsa, OK) and Buba Kovacevic
(Vrsac, Yugoslavia). Williston, ORU's
second-leading scorer at 12.4 ppg, has a stress fracture in her
left femur, while Kovacevic will undergo surgery next week for a
torn meniscus in her right knee. Both are out until at least
February.
Elisha
Turek's (Council Bluffs, IA) strong first half and a
stifling defense gave the Golden Eagles a 30-21 lead at halftime.
The freshman forward had 12 points and eight rebounds at the break,
going 6-of-8 from the field. The Golden Eagles limited UMKC to 25
percent (9-36) shooting in the first half while forcing nine
turnovers.
Turek finished with a
game-high 15 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out with nine
seconds left. Cannon had 10 points and seven assists and Claudia
Louis (Baton Rogue, LA) had 12 points and six rebounds.
Elllis led UMKC with 11
points.
