MACOMB, Ill. -- Ori Zuzic's (Porec, Croatia) 19
kills lead the Oral Roberts University volleyball team to a 3-1
(30-24, 20-30, 30-27, 30-24) victory over Western Illinois Sunday
night, giving the Golden Eagles sole possession of second place in
the Mid-Continent Conference standings. ORU has now won nine
consecutive league matches and 12 of 14 overall.
The junior outside hitter registered a .252 attack percentage while
adding 15 digs and five service aces for the Golden Eagles (17-8,
9-1). Zuzic now has recorded 15 double-doubles this season and
reached double figure kills in 16 straight matches.
With the match tied at one game a piece, ORU took control of game
three after going up 17-6 thanks to a 12-1 run. Western (14-11,
8-3) put together a late charge, pulling within 28-27, but the
Golden Eagles got kills from freshman JoJo Souza
(Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Jackie Oliveira (Minas
Gerais, Brazil) for a 30-27 win.
Both freshman finished the night was solid all-around efforts, as
Oliveira tallied 10 kills, seven digs, and five blocks, and Souza
added eight markers, six digs, and four blocks.
ORU shut the door on the Westerwinds in game four - leading from
start to finish and limiting the home squad to a mere .020 attack
percentage - as they wrapped up the match with a 30-24
match-clinching victory.
The Golden Eagle defense was superb all night, holding Western to a
.162 attack percentage as they dug nearly half of WIU's attacks.
Libero Cris Alves (Sao Caetano, Brazil) paced the
defense with a match-high 32 digs.
Ashley Baker led the Westerwinds with 16 kills, while Amy Sauerwein
added 14 markers and 18 digs.
ORU will step out of Mid-Con action as they travel to SEC foe
Arkansas on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. match.
