ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The Oral Roberts University volleybal team
pulled within one game of its seventh Mid-Continent Conference
regular season title with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-22, 30-22) victory over
Oakland Friday night at the "0" Rena. The winner of Sunday's
ORU/Valparasio match will claim the top seed in next weekend's
Mid-Con Tournament.
Middle blocker Maja Devic (Split, Croatia) led the
Golden Eagles (21-9, 12-1) with 10 kills, and hit .286. Outside
hitter Ori Zuzic (Porec, Croatia) added nine
kills, 11 digs, and five blocks, while rightside hitter
Jackie Oliveira (Minas Gerais, Brazil) finished
with nine kills and 14 digs.
ORU nearly led from start to finish, as the Golden Grizzlies (5-26,
4-9) lone lead of the match was a 1-0 advantage in game one. The
Golden Eagles never gave Oakland a chance in games two or three,
jumping out to early 10-3 and 10-4 leads, respectively.
ORU out-hit their opposition .200 to .088, totaling 48 kills to
Oakland's 31. They also held a 70-47 advantage in digs. Libero
Cris Alves (Sao Caetano, Brazil) paced the defense
with a match-high 23 digs.
The Golden Eagles have now won 14 of their last 16 matches and
claimed 11 consecutive victories in conference play.
The 2005 Mid-Con regular season championship will be on the line
when Valparaiso hosts ORU Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
