WASHINGTON, D.C.€"Roy Hibbert scored 23 points and
grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Georgetown to a 73-58 win over Oral
Roberts, Saturday at the Verizon Center.
Hibbert, the Hoyas 7-foot-2, 280-pound center was 10-of-12 from the
field and perfect on all three of his free throw attempts. He
helped the Hoyas (6-3) to a 58.3-percent shooting night.
The
Golden Eagles (4-4) struggled throughout much of the first half, as
Georgetown raced to a 14-2 lead on a dunk by Jeff Green with 13:16
left in the first half.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Moses Ehambe (Arlington,
Texas) brought ORU within 14-8 with 11:42 left in the half, but
Georgetown used a 10-2 run over the next 3:50 to gain at 24-10 lead
with 7:52 to go before halftime. ORU trailed by as many as 22 in
the first half before Georgetown settled for a 40-20 lead at
intermission.
After
shooting just 37 percent in the first half,
ORU€™s offense heated up after halftime.
Marchello Vealy (Oklahoma City, Okla.) scored five
straight points to bring ORU within 42-28 with 17:16 left, and
Caleb Green (Tulsa, Okla.) followed with his first
basket of the half at the 16:17 mark to make it a 42-30
contest.
But the
Hoyas maintained control, pushing the lead back up to 18 points
when Marc Egerson€™s layup capped a 6-0 spurt to
make it 8-30 with 14:18 to go.
Vealy,
however, kept ORU in the game. He got an offensive rebound, a layup
a steal and 3-pointer €" all in the span of 30 seconds
€" to make it 50-37 with 12:17 left. Caleb
Green came up with a steal and a layup as ORU got within
50-39, but again Georgetown responded and pushed the lead to 61-43
on a dunk by Hibbert with 7:47 remaining.
ORU had
one last run. Down by 18, Green converted a three-point play and
Ken Tutt (Garland, Texas) drained a 3-pointer,
trimming the Hoyas€™ lead to 63-49. Back-to-back
short jumpers by Tutt put ORU within 63-53.
But a
foul call on Yemi Ogunoye (Cedar Hill, Texas)
during a scrum for a loose ball, and a subsequent technical on the
ORU bench, turned the game in the final four minutes. Jonathan
Wallace made both free throws and Egerson hit a layup on the
ensuing possession as Georgetown went up 69-53 with 3:41 left, and
ORU never challenged again.
Tutt
finished with a team-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including
3-of-8 from 3-point range. Green finished with 15 points and seven
rebounds, but was just 5-of-15 from the field. Vealy provided a
spark off the bench with 10 points, six rebounds and two steals in
29 minutes.
ORU
shot 45 percent in the second half and finished a 42 percent
overall, including 27.3 percent from 3-point range.
Jeff
Green scored 15 points for the Hoyas, with Wallace adding 12 and
Egerson 11 of the bench.
Georgetown dominated the glass, out-rebounding ORU 34-21.
The
Golden Eagles return to action when they visit Chattanooga, 2 p.m.,
Saturday, December 16.
