MEMPHIS, Tenn.
�€" Clemson University's Michael Brooks scored in the
72nd minute as the Tigers went on to defeat Oral
Roberts University 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Memphis-Diadora
Tournament in Memphis, Tenn.
The match was scoreless in the
first half as Clemson out shot the Golden Eagles 12-5. Goalkeeper
Carlos Veron (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Clemson's GK
Phil Marfuggi each had three saves in the opening frame.
In the second half Clemson,
whom is ranked fifth nationally by NSCAA and sixth by Soccer
America, broke the scoreless match in the 72nd minute. CU's Michael Brooks shot clipped
ORU's Veron's hands and went into the net. Danny Poe was credited
with the assist.
Clemson extended the lead to 2-0
with a penalty kick 1:01 after Brooks goal. Dane Richards netted
the free kick at 72:38.
The game was plagued by fouls and
yellow cards. ORU and Clemson combined for 45 fouls with the Golden
Eagles receiving 25. There were six yellow cards in the match.
The Tigers kept the pressure on
ORU's defense and Veron most of the game while out shooting the
Golden Eagles 30-9. Veron kept ORU in it while finishing the day
with nine saves.
With the loss ORU dropped to 0-3-1
on a very competitive non-conference schedule while Clemson stays
unbeaten at 4-0-0.
ORU will travel to Shreveport, La.
on Friday to play Georgia Southern in the Centenary Tournament. The
match will begin at 6 p.m.
