TULSA Janae
Voelker's career-high 17 points was more than enough to push
the Golden Eagles (1-0) to a 70-50 win over the Cameron Aggies
(0-1) on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center.
The Newton, Kan., sophomore also tacked on
seven rebounds in the win, while three other starters were able to
score in double-digits. Juniors Mariana
Camargo and Rachel Watman each chipped in 13 points, with
Camargo dishing out seven assists and five steals. Freshman Leanne
Robison poured in 10 points for ORU, going three-for-three from
inside the arc in the second half.
Keindra Scott and Tiffany Williams led the
Aggies with 12 points each, while Megan Atkins grabbed eight
rebounds.
The Golden Eagles held the Cameron to 31
percent field-goal shooting and 16.7 percent from behind the arc,
while forcing 31 turnovers to ORU's 18.
ORU would jump out to and early 17-2 lead in
the first half, 10 of those points coming from Rachel Watman. The
Golden Eagles defense would hold Cameron to only two points until
the 10:28 mark, when the Aggies would go on an 11-2 run to close
the gap to six points, 19-13. Cameron's Kristi Taylor would pull
the Aggies to within five with a made free throw, but the Golden
Eagles would score nine-straight points to go in to the halftime
break with a 34-20 advantage.
The Golden Eagles would pour on the defense
again early in the second half, holding the Aggies to no points
until the 16:14 mark when Keindra Scott would lay the ball in to
push the score to 40-20, advantage ORU. Both teams would trade
points until the Golden Eagles would stretch the score to 52-27
after an eight-point run and eventually would extend the score to
the largest lead of the game at 70-42. Cameron would end the game
on an eight-point run to end the game 70-50.
ORU will return to the court Tuesday, Nov. 13
as they travel across town to take on city-rival Tulsa at the
Reynolds Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
