Golden Eagles Sweep Oakland; IPFW up Next

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The ORU volleyball team (15-12, 10-3 Summit League) got back on the winning track, defeating the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (7-19, 3-10 Summit League) in three-straight games, 30-20, 30-12, 30-24.

Four players finished the match in double-digit kills with junior Jackie Oliveira leading the way with a match-high 14 kills. The Minas Gerais, Brazil native also 17 digs on the night. Juniors JoJo Souza and Danijela Novakovic each dished out 11 kills, while freshman Jocelyn Swier posted 10 kills off of 14 attempts for a sweet .643 hitting percentage.

Junior libero Carol Garbato captured her third-straight 20-plus dig match, tallying 23 in the quick 3-0 win over OU, while sophomore Juliane Vieira had a match-high 44 assists for the Golden Eagles.

Oakland struck first for the Grizzlies with an Adrienne Leone kill, but Jocelyn Swier immediately tied the game at 1-1 with a kill of her own. WIth an ORU attack error and a Stephanie Parkin kill, OU would take a 3-1 kill, which would be the biggest lead of the game. The Golden Eagles would go on a run to take the 7-6 lead, which they would extend that lead to 10 and would eventually win the game by 10 with the help of back-to-back Oakland errors, winning 30-20.

ORU punished the Grizzlies in game two, jumping out to a 11-3 lead, which would be enough for the Golden Eagles to run away with the game, winning 30-12 with three-straight kills to end the game.

Oakland would try and put a fight in game three, staying with the Golden Eagles for the first few points, but ORU would jump out to a 10-5 lead with four Grizzly errors. Oakland would come back with a five-one run to get within three, but ORU would follow that with a 7-2 run to get out-of-reach of the Grizzlies. The Golden Eagles would win game three 30-24 and keep their perfect 20-0 record against Oakland alive.

Next up for ORU is a 6 p.m. match with IPFW on Saturday night in Fort Wayne, Ind. ORU and IPFW are a part of a five-way tie for first place in the conference.
