Golden Eagles Fall to Texas Southern, 48-52

HOUSTON - The Oral Roberts women's basketball team fell to 4-1 on the season after a 48-52 setback to the Tigers of Texas Southern (1-4) Saturday afternoon.

Junior Jenny Hardin would lead the Golden Eagles with 13 points on the night, seven of those from the free-throw line, while sophomore Janae Voelker finished the game with 10 points and eight boards.

Taneisha Riles led the way for Texas Southern with a game-high 22 points and Jessica Vann added 14, scoring the final four points of the game.

ORU was 0-for-23 from behind the arc and shot 29.3 percent from field-goal range, but continue to improve at the free-throw line, shooting 87.5 percent (14-16) for the game.

Voelker was the only Golden Eagle to score a basket in the first 12 minutes of the game with eight points, while Monah Pegorari added two free throws to give ORU a 10-2 lead at the 11:57 mark.

With back-to-back baskets and back-to-back free-throws by Jenny Hardin, ORU would extend their lead to 20-7 with seven minutes left in the first half. Texas Southern would fight back, going on an 8-3 run to close the Golden Eagle lead to four, 19-23, with four minutes left in the half.

The Tigers would go on a six-two run, scoring six-straight free-throws to tie the game at 25-25 to go into the locker room at half-time with the first tie of the game.

ORU would open up the second half on a 6-0 run with the help of four Hardin points to reclaim their lead, 31-25. Southern would battle back to come within two before ORU would get four points from Rachel Watman, her first points of the game to open the lead back up to eight, 39-31.

TSU's Tareisha Riles would put up three three-pointers to tie the game at 43-43 with 3:54 left and would eventually take the 48-46 lead with a Riles basket. Jessica Vann's four-straight free throws would seal the deal for the Tigers, giving them their first win of the season, 52-48.

The Golden Eagles will travel to Boise, Idaho on Monday, Dec. 3 for a 8 p.m. (CST) match-up with defending WAC Champions Boise State.
