AUSTIN, TexasD.J. Augustin scored a game-high 24 points to
lead No. 4 Texas to a 66-56 victory over Oral Roberts University,
Tuesday at Erwin Center.
ORU (6-4) limited the Longhorns (11-0) to a season-worst 37.9
field-goal shooting percentage, but couldn't overcome 37.1 percent
shooting of its own. The Golden Eagles entered the game making 42.7
percent from 3-point range, but were limited to 20 percent (4-20)
on Tuesday.
Despite their offensive struggles and the Longhorns' lofty ranking,
the Golden Eagles never let Texas pull away. A see-saw affair saw
eight lead changes and six ties before Texas took control late in
the game.
The Golden Eagles stayed within four points for much of the first
half. With Texas leading 24-20 with 8:48 before halftime, ORU
countered with a pair off free throws by Marcus
Lewis (Long Beach, Calif.) and a layup by Shawn
King (Bequia, St. Vincent), knotting the score at 24 with 7:43
left.
Connor Atchely drained a three-pointer on the Longhorns next
possession for a 29-26 lead, but again ORU responded. A fast-break
basket by
Robert Jarvis (Humble, Texas) and a Jarvis steal
and layup by King gave ORU a 30-29 lead with 3:31 left.
Following a bucket by Augustin, Marchello
Vealy (Oklahoma City, Okla.) converted a three-point play with
1:35 before the break, giving ORU a 33-31 lead. Augustin made two
free throws 10 seconds later and the teams went into halftime tied
at 33.
The Longhorns scored the first eight points of the second half,
taking a 41-33 lead on an Augustin trey with 17:19 to play. A
jumper by Vealy and two free throws by Liberty pulled the Golden
Eagles within 41-37 with 16:26 to go.
Texas pushed the lead to 49-42 with 11:43 left, but again ORU
responded. Lewis made a layup and Kelvin
Sango (Tulsa, Okla.) scored a fast-break layup to pull ORU
within 49-46 at 10:33.
ORU's comeback stalled on its next possession, when a Sango layup
was waved off after he was whistled for an offensive foul. Texas
quickly pushed the lead to eight points at 54-46 and ORU never got
closer than five the rest of the way.
Liberty led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 12 points,
adding a career-high eight rebounds. Vealy added 11 points and
eight rebounds, while Jarvis chipped in with 10.
Atchley supported Augustin with 16 points and five boards for
Texas, while A.J. Abrams added 11 points.
The Longhorns shot 16-of-21 from the free throw line, compared to
just 6-of-12 for ORU. Texas out-rebounded ORU, 40-37. ORU committed
a season-low nine turnovers. The 10-point margin was the lowest for
Texas in seven home games.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they take on Oklahoma
State, 6 p.m., Thursday, in the 72nd O'Reilly All-College Classic
at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City. The game cane be seen on
ESPN2.
