DALLAS, Texas SMU's Bruno Guarda scored on a penalty kick in
the final minute of play in double-overtime as the Mustangs
defeated Oral Roberts University, 3-2, in non-conference soccer
action, Saturday night at Westcott Field.
With the loss, ORU falls to 2-5-0, while SMU improves to 4-2-1.
This was the second straight game the Golden Eagles have played
against current top-15 teams. In fact, five of the seven teams ORU
has played are currently ranked in the top-10 in their respected
region. Tonight's match marked the sixth time ORU has played away
from their home stadium this season.
Guarda's game-winner came at the 109:36 mark, just 24 seconds
before the match would have ended.
SMU started the scoring with a goal by Dane Saintus in the 65th
minute to go up 1-0. Saintus one-touched a ball from Guarda after
Guarda dribbled through the ORU defense.
The Golden Eagles countered just under two minutes later to knot
the score at 1-1.
Tommy Apitz scored his first goal of the year on
a loose ball in the box after a corner taken by Jorge
Davila. The goal came at the 67:10 mark.
SMU's Scott Geppert scored off a header from a corner kick by Gabe
Arredondo to reclaim the lead for the Mustangs at the 71:46
mark.
Schmoker's game-tying goal came in the 77th minute as the junior
midfielder got loose on a breakaway and planted the ball in the
upper right corner of the net from about 15 yards out.
SMU held a 19-7 advantage in shots, but the Golden Eagles actually
held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal.

Andrew Techanchuk secured five shots, while
facing 19 shots.
ORU returns to action on Friday, traveling to Des Moines, Iowa to
battle Missouri Valley Conference foe Drake. Game match is slated
for 7 p.m.
