ORU Sweeps Past IPFW with 3-0 Win

TULSA - The Oral Roberts volleyball team continues to stay perfect in conference play after defeating the IPFW Mastadons (8-7, 2-3 Summit League) in three-straight games Friday evening in front of a packed Cooper Aerobics Center. ORU won by scores of 30-23, 30-15, 32-30.

The Golden Eagles have now won nine-straight games in the Aerobics Center since their home-opener two weeks ago against Oakland.

The Golden Eagles (8-7, 3-0 Summit League) were led by juniors JoJo Souza and Janete Ferreira, each who registered 11 kills for ORU. Souza tacked on a service ace and a block, while Ferreira snagged dished out 13 digs for the Golden Eagles giving the Sao Paulo, Brazil native her sixth double-double of the year.

Juniors Jackie Oliveira and Danijela Novakovic each posted 10 kills in the match for ORU, while junior setter Thais Parada tallied 44 assists, her best of the season, and five kills in the win. Freshman Jocelyn Swier also had a nice match for the Golden Eagles, tying her career-best of six kills, while setting a new career-high with two solo blocks.

IPFW sophomore Rebekah Roehm and junior Jessica Miller finished with a team-high 11 kills each in the match. Junior setter Jessica Dominiak led the Mastadons in the assists category with 31 total.

ORU traded points with IPFW for the first three points, but that was as close as the match would be as the Golden Eagles would remain in control after taking a 10-5 lead in game one. ORU would lead by as many as seven and would win game one with a service ace by JoJo Souza, 30-23.

The Golden Eagles defense was outstanding in game two as ORU held IPFW to a -.182 hitting percentage. The Mastadons could not get into a rhythm, committing 16 attack errors, while ORU capitalized on their mistakes, taking game two 30-15.

IPFW would not go down easily though, almost forcing a game four after coming back from being six points down to take the lead, 28-27, after a bad set by freshman Jocelyn Swier. A block by Jessica Miller and Kylee Hervey would give the Mastadons a two-point lead, 29-27, but ORU would fight back with two huge kills by Janete Ferreira to tie the game at 29-all. Jackie Oliveira would lay down a kill to give ORU a one-point lead, 31-30 and would win the game 32-30 off an IPFW attack error.

The Golden Eagles will continue conference action Saturday night as ORU hosts IUPUI in a 7 p.m. match at the Cooper Aerobics Center.
