TULSA Arkansas's Abbey Wilburn
scored in the opening minute as the Razorbacks defeated
Oral
Roberts
University, 3-0, spoiling the
Golden Eagles home opener at the ORU Soccer Complex, on Wednesday
night.
With the win Arkansas
improved
to 2-1-0 while ORU fell to 0-2-0 on
the young season.
Arkansas received the ball
from the beginning and quickly pushed it down the field with Kelly
O' Connor feeding the ball to Wilburn. Wilburn blasted the ball
just under the crossbar past ORU goalkeeper Stef Gurley for a quick
1-0 lead, just 20 seconds in.
ORU settled down after the
quick strike from the Razorbacks as the Golden Eagles looked to tie
the ballgame, but Arkansas's goalkeeper Britni
Williams had different plans and did let the home team
rally.
The Razorbacks added
another tally in the 35th minute with a goal from
O'Connor. The Golden Eagles blocked the initial shot by Allison
Harris but O'Connor planted the rebound in the back of the
net.
ORU came out aggressive in
the second half and played up to par with the Razorbacks
until Arkansas added an insurance
goal in the 73rd minute, increasing the lead to 3-0.
Harris, who assisted on the second goal, scored off a corner kick
set up by Kim Schleif.
Although Arkansas
dominated the
stats throughout the first half, both teams had nine shots apiece
in the second frame.
Gurley had several huge
saves in the second half, limiting the Razorbacks to three goals on
27 shots. Overall the senior goalkeeper had an impressive 14 saves.
The 14 stops from Gurley was just one save shy of tying a
single-game record set by Kellie Fenton against Oklahoma State in 2003.
Arkansas's Williams ended
the night with six saves.
The Golden Eagles continue
their home slate with a match against Louisiana-Monroe on Friday
at 7
p.m.
