TULSA Shakira Duncan
scored two goals and the Golden Eagles added two insurance goals in
the last four minutes as Oral Roberts University
defeated Louisiana-Monroe, 4-1, on
Friday night.
The win was the first for
the Golden Eagles in 2007 as they improved to 1-2-0 while ULM dropped to 2-2-0 with the
loss.
ORU had an offensive
outburst on a wet ORU Soccer Complex as they out shot the Warhawks
30-17.
Duncan gave ORU their first lead
of the game at the 48:37 mark as she wrapped a shot around
ULM's goalkeeper Mallory
George, giving ORU the 1-0 lead.
The lead did not last long
though as ULM's Raydan Phillips knotted
the score at 1-1 in the 61st minute, deflecting Rachel
Hobson's free kick past ORU's Stef Gurley into the back of the
net.
Just a little over 10
minutes later, Duncan struck again blasting a
loose rebound past George for the eventual game-winner. Emily
Gagnon was credited with the assist.
Gagnon and Lorena Soto
added some insurance with two goals in the last four minutes to
give ORU a 4-1 cushion. Gagnon scored off a nice feed from Tara
Lomis at the 86:56 mark while Soto sent a long shot just under the
crossbar and beyond the reach of ULM's George.
Gurley had another
impressive night for the Golden Eagles with nine saves.
ULM's George also recorded
nine stops in a losing effort.
ORU heads to Stillwater, Okla. Sunday, facing
Xavier in the second round of the Oklahoma State
Invitational.
