ORU Spikers Win In Three At IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Oral Roberts University volleyball team won at IUPUI, 3-0, (27-25, 30-38, 29-27) at The Jungle Arena Friday evening in Indianapolis.

ORU picked up its third straight win and improved to 10-5 on the season and are now 4-1 in the Summit League. IUPUI falls to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in conference action. The Golden Eagles are now 24-3 all-time against the Jaguars.

ORU was led by senior outside hitter Danijela Novakovic (Rijeka, Croatia) who tied a season-high 15 kills and added career-highs with two block solos and five block assists, while senior middle blocker JoJo Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil) also added 15 kills. Junior middle blocker Talita Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) hit .500 on the night as she registered a match and career-high eight block assists. Senior setter Juliane Vieira (Ribeira Preto, Brazil) recorded a season-high 41 assists.

IUPUI was led by Kalyse Reimbold's match-high 16 kills, while Danielle Goodnight added 34 assists and Chelsea Bastin tallied a match-high 19 digs.

The Golden Eagles finished the match with a .227 hitting percentage, while IUPUI only hit .152. ORU also recorded 14 more kills (54-40), 13 more assists (50-37), eight more blocks (21-13) and four more digs (57-53).

IUPUI took a 5-1 lead in the first set before the Golden Eagles came back on a 10-6 run to tie it up at 11-all, as Souza led the attack and the serve. After a tie at 14-all, Souza served out the next five points helping ORU take a 17-15 lead. Novakovic and Vieira added to ORU's attack effort and kept the Golden Eagles up by five at 21-16. IUPUI fought back on an 8-3 run to tie up the match at 24-24 and forced ORU to take a timeout. The Golden Eagles picked up an easy point on a Jaguar attacking error but a service error on ORU tied up the set a 25-25. Novakovic capped off the set with two kills to give the Golden Eagles the first set victory.

The second set saw ties at 2, 3, 4 and 5 before IUPUI went on a 6-2 run to take an 11-7 lead. ORU followed with a 7-3 run to tie up the set at 14-all as Souza continued to lead the Golden Eagle attack with four kills and the Jaguars committed three attacking errors. After two ORU kills, the Jaguars were forced to take a timeout with the Golden Eagles leading 16-14. Novakovic came out with a kill to take ORU up 17-14 before ORU committed three errors to help IUPUI tie up the set at 20-20. A Souza kill helped the Golden Eagles take a 23-21 lead but the set would see five more ties before two attacking errors on the Jaguars gave ORU the win.

The Jaguars took a 4-2 lead in the third set before ORU came back on an 8-6 run to tie up the set at 10-10 as Souza and Santos led the attack and IUPUI committed three more attacking errors. After five more ties, the Jaguars went on a 4-0 run to take a 19-15 lead before Novakovic and Souza added three kills as part a 5-0 by the Golden Eagles to give ORU a 20-19 lead. Seven ties brought the score to 27-all as Vieira added a kill to give ORU a chance at set and match point. A block assist by Santos and Vieira gave the Golden Eagles the set and match victory.

ORU continues action on the road Saturday, Oct. 4 at Western Illinois at 7 p.m.
