Golden Eagles Sweep Golden Grizzlies In Three Sets

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oral Roberts University volleyball team beat Oakland, 3-0, (25-22, 28-26, 25-21) Saturday evening at OU's Athletics Center O'Rena.

ORU improved to 17-7 overall and 10-2 in Summit League action, while OU falls to 6-18 overall and 3-9 in conference play. The Golden Eagles stay undefeated in the all-time series against the Golden Grizzlies, holding a 22-0 advantage.

The Golden Eagles were led by senior outside hitter Danijela Novakovic (Rijeka, Croatia) who recorded a season-high 16 kills and a career-high 13 digs, while freshman right side hitter Serena Cate (Yorba Linda,Calif.) and sophomore outside hitter Jocelyn Swier (Ripon, Calif.) both tallied 10 kills. Swier also hit a match-high .474 on the night. Junior setter Juliane Vieira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added 23 assists and senior outside hitter Janete Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) posted a match-high 15 digs.

OU was led by Andrienne Leone, who recorded nine kills, while Amy Golem added eight kills. Samantha Filipek tallied 17 assists and Lauren Duquette posted a match-high 18 digs.

The Golden Eagles hit .261 for the evening, while the Golden Grizzlies hit .146. ORU also recorded 19 more kills (54-35), 17 more assists (48-31) and nine more digs (62-53), while OU recorded three more blocks (10-7).

OU started off the first set with a 6-0 lead and continued to keep its lead through most of the match before ORU tied it up at 18-all with Swier and Cate leading the Golden Eagle attack. After ties at 19 and 20, ORU took a two point lead off Vieira and Ferreira kills. Senior middle blocker JoJo Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil) smashed two kills to give the Golden Eagles a 24-21 lead and Novakovic gave ORU the first set win on a kill.

The Golden Grizzlies took off on a 10-3 lead to start the second set and continued to keep a five point lead until the Golden Eagles took a 3-0 run off two Novakovic kills to come within two points at 21-23. Two more Novakovic kills tied up the set at 24-all. After two more ties and OU attacking error, ORU lead 27-26 and a Ferreira kill gave the Golden Eagles the second set victory.

OU took a 9-4 lead to start off the third set before ORU rode the Novakovic serve through the next nine points to give the Golden Eagles a 12-9 lead. Souza and Cate kills put the Golden Eagles up 14-11 while four OU attacking errors gave ORU a 20-16 lead. Swier and Ferreira led the attack for the next two points, giving the Golden Eagles a 22-18 lead. Two Cate kills and an OU service error finished off the third set and gave ORU the set and match points.

ORU takes a break from conference action this week to host Texas-Pan American on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles continue league play next weekend, hosting IUPUI on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. and Centenary on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. All home matches are played in the Cooper Aerobics Center on the ORU campus.
