Golden Eagles Beat UMKC In Four Sets Sunday

TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts University volleyball team wrapped up regular season action at home with a 3-1 win (21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21) against UMKC Sunday afternoon in the Cooper Aerobics Center on the ORU campus.

ORU is now 21-8 overall and finished the Summit League season in second with a 13-3 record, while UMKC falls to 12-20 overall and 5-11 in conference play for a sixth place finish. The Golden Eagles are 37-2 all-time against the Kangaroos.

The Golden Eagles were led by senior outside hitter Janete Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), as she recorded a team-high 11 kills and added eight digs, while senior middle blocker JoJo Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil) hit .364 and tallied nine kills. Senior right side hitter Jackie Oliveira (Minas Gerais, Brazil) registered a match-high 17 digs and junior setter Juliane Vieira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added a double-double with 12 assists and 11 digs. Senior setter Thais Parada (Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched a match-high 23 assists. Junior middle blocker Talita Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) hit a team-high .400 and smashed a match-high six blocks, including five block assists.

UMKC was led by Elizabeth Beck's match-high 12 kills, while Jaime Hagerman tacked on 10. Danni Sperry registered 20 assists and nine digs, while Mandy Tipton recorded nine kills and a team-high 15 digs.

ORU hit .174 on the day, while UMKC hit .164. UMKC tallied more kills (51-49), more assists (46-43), more digs (60-59) and more block assists (18-15), while the Golden Eagles recorded more service aces (5-4) and committed four less attacking errors (23-27).

After falling 12-25 in the first set, the Kangaroos took an early 7-4 lead in the second set before the Golden Eagles came back to tie it up at 7-all with UMKC committing two errors. ORU took off on a 7-4 run to go up 15-11 as Ferreira led the Golden Eagles attack. A Souza kill put ORU up 16-12, while two Tipton kills would put the Kangaroos back to within two at 14-16. After three Oliveira kills, the Golden Eagles were up 20-16 while four UMKC errors were allow ORU to go for match point at 24-19. Sophomore middle hitter Jocelyn Swier (Ripon, Calif.) gave the Golden Eagles the final point on a kill for the second set and tie up the match at one game each.

The Golden Eagles charged ahead in the third set with a 7-1 lead, as Swier led the ORU attack with three kills. UMKC came back with seven unanswered points to take an 8-7 lead. After a tie at 8-all, the Kangaroos would continue to lead by at least one point through the next eight points. A Ferreira kill tied up the set for the final time at 12-12. After a 4-1 Golden Eagle run, ORU led 16-13 as Ferreira added a kill and a service ace for two of those points. Two UMKC errors allowed the Golden Eagles to go up 18-15 while Parada and Santos kills took the Golden Eagles lead to 20-17. Two UMKC attacking errors and a Ferreira kill would put ORU to within a two point win. A Kangaroo service error allowed ORU a chance to serve match point, while a UMKC attacking error gave the Golden Eagles the third set victory.

ORU rode the serve of Vieira for the first three points of the fourth set, while a Swier kill and Ferreira service ace put the Golden Eagles up 5-1 early. After two UMKC service errors and a Parada service ace, ORU led 9-5 while a Parada kill and a UMKC attacking error put the Golden Eagles up 11-6. Two kills from both Swier and Souza gave ORU a 16-12 lead and an attacking error on the Kangaroos put the Golden Eagles up 17-12. ORU took a 6-2 run to take a 23-14 lead before UMKC fought back with seven unanswered points to come back within two at 21-23. Freshman right side hitter Serena Cate (Yorba Linda, Calif.) answered with two straight kills for the Golden Eagles and gave ORU the set and match win.

The Golden Eagles host the Summit League Tournament next weekend, as ORU is the No. 2 seed and will face the No. 3 seed on Friday, Nov. 21 in the Cooper Aerobics Center on the ORU campus. More tournament information will be available on the ORU website and the Summit League website at the beginning of next week.
