Golden Eagles Suffer Overtime Heartbreaker at Louisiana-Lafayette, 79-75

LAFAYETTE, La.—Tyren Johnson tied the game by making one-of-two free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining in regulation, and Louisiana-Lafayette out-scored Oral Roberts 13-9 in overtime as the Ragin' Cajuns rallied for a 79-75 win over the Golden Eagles, Tuesday at Cajundome.

The Golden Eagles (1-3) squandered a 10-point lead with less then six minutes remaining in regulation (58-48) as they stayed winless against Division I competition. ULL (1-3) picked up its first win of the season in a game which featured 18 lead changes and seven ties.

With ORU leading 66-65 with less than 10 seconds to play, the Golden Eagles turned the ball over and Johnson drew a block call on Robert Jarvis (Humble, Texas) with :2.5 to play. Johnson made the first of two free throws, but missed the potential game-winner on his second attempt. A half-court heave by Jarvis hit the front of the rim, as the game went to overtime.

In the extra period, ORU got on the board first when Kyron Stokes (Mansfield, Texas) stole the opening tip and raced to the basket for a layup and a 68-66 lead just four seconds into overtime.

The teams traded baskets on their next two possessions before ULL went on top for good. Down 70-69 the Ragin' Cajuns went on a 6-1 run, taking a 75-71 lead on a Jeremy Barr jump hook with 1:59 to play.

A free throw by Marcus Lewis (Long Beach, Calif.) trimmed the lead to 75-72 with 1:45 remaining. Ryan McCoy answered with a three-pointer for a 78-72 ULL lead with 1:13 left, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Freshman forward Dominique Morrison (Kansas City, Mo.) led ORU with 20 points, his second straight 20-point effort. Morrison was 6-of-12 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. He also added two rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Stokes scored 14 of his career-high 18 points in the first half. The redshirt freshman swing man padded his stat line with eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Jarvis and Andre Hardy (San Diego, Calif.) – both removed from the starting lineup for the first time all season – came off the bench to combine for 29 points. Jarvis scored 16 on 6-of-19 shooting, and added five rebounds. Hardy had 13 points, eight boards and two steals.

ULL's Johnson led all scorers with 21 points, making 8-of-12 from the field and 4-of-6 at the line. He was joined in double-figures by Travis Bureau with 18 points.

The Golden Eagles shot 42.1 percent from the field, going 7-of-21 from three-point range. ORU was a season-best 20-of-27 from the line, but was out-rebounded, 37-29.

The Ragin' Cajuns shot 48.1 percent – including 52 percent in the second half when they took a 35-34 lead into the locker room. They matched ORU at the line, and were 7-of-17 from three-point range.

The Golden Eagles return to action when they visit Missouri, 3 p.m., Sunday. The game can be seen on Fox Sports Midwest and ESPN.360 broadband network.
