LAFAYETTE, La.Tyren Johnson tied the game by making
one-of-two free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining in regulation,
and Louisiana-Lafayette out-scored Oral Roberts 13-9 in overtime as
the Ragin' Cajuns rallied for a 79-75 win over the Golden Eagles,
Tuesday at Cajundome.
The Golden Eagles (1-3) squandered a 10-point lead with less then
six minutes remaining in regulation (58-48) as they stayed winless
against Division I competition. ULL (1-3) picked up its first win
of the season in a game which featured 18 lead changes and seven
ties.
With ORU leading 66-65 with less than 10 seconds to play, the
Golden Eagles turned the ball over and Johnson drew a block call on
Robert Jarvis (Humble, Texas) with :2.5 to play.
Johnson made the first of two free throws, but missed the potential
game-winner on his second attempt. A half-court heave by Jarvis hit
the front of the rim, as the game went to overtime.
In the extra period, ORU got on the board first when Kyron
Stokes (Mansfield, Texas) stole the opening tip and raced to
the basket for a layup and a 68-66 lead just four seconds into
overtime.
The teams traded baskets on their next two possessions before ULL
went on top for good. Down 70-69 the Ragin' Cajuns went on a 6-1
run, taking a 75-71 lead on a Jeremy Barr jump hook with 1:59 to
play.
A free throw by
Marcus Lewis (Long Beach, Calif.) trimmed the
lead to 75-72 with 1:45 remaining. Ryan McCoy answered with a
three-pointer for a 78-72 ULL lead with 1:13 left, effectively
putting the game out of reach.
Freshman forward
Dominique Morrison (Kansas City, Mo.) led ORU
with 20 points, his second straight 20-point effort. Morrison was
6-of-12 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. He also
added two rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Stokes scored 14 of his career-high 18 points in the first half.
The redshirt freshman swing man padded his stat line with eight
rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Jarvis and
Andre Hardy (San Diego, Calif.) both
removed from the starting lineup for the first time all season
came off the bench to combine for 29 points. Jarvis scored
16 on 6-of-19 shooting, and added five rebounds. Hardy had 13
points, eight boards and two steals.
ULL's Johnson led all scorers with 21 points, making 8-of-12 from
the field and 4-of-6 at the line. He was joined in double-figures
by Travis Bureau with 18 points.
The Golden Eagles shot 42.1 percent from the field, going 7-of-21
from three-point range. ORU was a season-best 20-of-27 from the
line, but was out-rebounded, 37-29.
The Ragin' Cajuns shot 48.1 percent including 52 percent in
the second half when they took a 35-34 lead into the locker room.
They matched ORU at the line, and were 7-of-17 from three-point
range.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they visit Missouri, 3
