Golden Eagles Fall to NDSU in Double-Overtime, 75-72

FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State (16-11, 11-6 Summit League) got 23 points from senior Brenda Slyt and 21 from senior Lisa Bue to defeat the Oral Roberts' women's basketball team (16-12, 10-7 Summit League) 72-75 in double-overtime.

Junior Mariana Camargo broke her career scoring high against the Bison with 22 points on the afternoon, shooting a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw stripe. Camargo also chipped in nine rebounds and three assists, while playing a career-high 47 minutes.

Junior Jenny Hardin scored 13 points before fouling out late in the second half. Sophomore Janae Voelker also scored 13 points (nine of those points from behind the arc), while grabbing seven boards before fouling out in the second overtime.

NDSU's Slyt finished the game with a double-double, tacking on 10 boards to her 23 points. Bue was close to a double-double with nine boards to her 21 points.

The first five possessions of the game found the lead swapped back-and-forth between teams until Voelker hit a 17-foot jumper to take the two-point lead, 9-7. ORU held on to the lead for the next five minutes before Jerri Penley's layup at the 8:10 mark tied the game, 15-15.

NDSU scored six-straight points to take the largest lead of the game, 24-18, but the Golden Eagles fought right back with a 12-2 run capped by a Rachel Watman three-pointer with 30 seconds left in the first half to take the four-point lead into the locker room, 30-26.

ORU's first basket of the second half didn't roll in until the 13:27 mark but by then, NDSU had sprinted out to a 41-32 lead after scoring 15-straight after the break. The Golden Eagles climbed back to within six of host NDSU with four-straight Hardin points, but the Bison's Emily Moran nailed a trey to cap a seven-point run that gave NDSU the 53-40 lead.

After a 30-second timeout, ORU lit a fire underneath scoring 12-straight aided by Kindell's third three-pointer of the game and Hardin's first trey in nearly a month to get the Golden Eagles back in the game, 53-50. Both teams traded points until Kindell's trey with 30 seconds left tied the game to send into over time.

NDSU scored four-straight points before Voelker hit a trey to get ORU within one, 65-64. Amanda Girodat hit both free-throws to give NDSU the 67-64 lead, but Voelker would find the spot at the top of the key again to hit her second trey to tie the game and send it in to overtime No. 2.

In the second overtime, NDSU hit baskets when they were needed. With the game scored at 72-72, senior Brenda Slyt flew in for a layup at the 24-second mark to give the Bison the two-point lead. Leanne Robison fouled Slyt to give the Golden Eagles a chance, but Slyt knocked in one-of-two free-throws to give the Bison the Senior Day victory, 75-72.

ORU wraps up the regular-season against top Summit League opponent South Dakota State at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 3 in Brookings, S.D.
