LINCOLN, Neb. - The Oral Roberts
University volleyball team (3-1) fell at No. 2 Nebraska (3-0)
Sunday evening. The Golden Eagles lost by scores of 19-25, 14-25
and 17-25 and snapped their three-match winning streak.
Senior hitter Jackie
Oliveira (Minas Gerais, Brazil) led ORU with 11 kills and
seven digs, while senior outside hitter Danijela Novakovic (Rijeka,
Croatia) recorded seven kills and eight digs. Senior middle blocker
JoJo Souza
(Sao Paulo, Brazil) tacked on six kills and hit .333 and senior
setter Thais
Parada (Sao Paulo, Brazil) registered five kills and 30
assists. Senior outside hitter Janete Ferreira (Sao Paulo,
Brazil) also tallied seven kills for the Golden Eagles.
ORU committed 21 attacking errors overall compared to eight from
Nebraska. The Huskers out-hit the Golden Eagles .390-.160. ORU also
had 11 service errors, while NU had only six in three sets.
Nebraska's Jordan Larsen led the team with nine kills, two service
aces and two solo blocks. The Huskers were dominate at the net,
tacking on 16 blocks compared to ORU's seven.
The Golden Eagles came to within one point at 3-4 after the Huskers
committed their second attacking error in the first set. Nebraska
took a 6-4 run to go up 10-7 while ORU took a 9-7 run to come back
within one at 17-16 with three Oliveira kills and two Souza kills
in that stretch. The Huskers went on a 9-3 run to finish out the
set.
Nebraska started out the second set on a 19-6 run as the Husker's
Larsen recorded five of those points including two service aces.
The Golden Eagles came back with a 5-4 run but it was took late for
a comeback as NU scored its last two points on an ORU attacking
error and a kill by Tara Mueller.
ORU took a 4-3 lead in the third set of the match on two Oliveira
kills, a Ferreira kill and an NU attacking error. The Huskers tied
it at 4-all on an Oliveira service error. Three more ORU errors
gave Nebraska a 7-5 lead. NU took off on an 8-5 run to go up 15-10
and didn't let go of its five point lead from there on to win the
final set and the match.
The Golden Eagles open action at home this weekend hosting the ORU
Classic. First match starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4 against
cross-town rival Tulsa and action will continue on Friday and
Saturday, Sept. 5-6.
