ORU Sweeps Oakland In Three

TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts University volleyball team swept Oakland, 3-0, (25-13, 25-13, 25-20) Friday evening in the Cooper Aerobics Center. ORU improves to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in Summit League action while Oakland falls to 3-11 and 0-3 in conference play. The Golden Eagles also stay undefeated all-time against the Golden Grizzlies and now hold a 21-0 advantage.

ORU was led by senior rightside hitter Jackie Oliveira (Minas Gerais, Brazil) who recorded a match-high 15 kills and hit .458 on the night, while senior outside hitter Danijela Novakovic (Rijeka, Croatia) and senior middle blocker JoJo Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil) both tallied seven kills. Souza also added a match-high five blocks (four block assists).

OU was led by Adrienne Leone's 10 kills while Amy Golem tallied six kills and Katy Wilson added 10 assists.

The Golden Eagles finished the match with a .270 hitting percentage while OU hit -.010. The Golden Eagles also recorded 13 more kills (40-27), eight more blocks (14-6) and 11 more assists (36-11).

The first set was tied at 1, 2 and 3 before ORU tallied two points off two kills, one from junior middle blocker Talita Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and the second from Oliveira. A 4-1 run opened up a five-point lead for the Golden Eagles at 9-4 while two Oakland attacking errors and an Oliveira kill gave ORU a 12-7 advantage. ORU took a 7-5 run as Oliveira, Souza and Novakovic led the attack to bring the Golden Eagles to a 19-12 lead. ORU rode the serve of senior setter Juliane Vieira (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) for the next four points and an OU service error gave the Golden Eagles a chance for match point. ORU freshman rightside hitter Serena Cate (Yorba Linda, Calif.) gave the Golden Eagles the first set victory on a kill.

Five Oakland attacking errors helped give ORU a 10-3 lead to start off the second set. After two Santos kills the score was 12-5 while OU committed seven more errors to allow the Golden Eagles to extend their lead to 13 at 21-8. After two Oliveira kills, ORU was up 24-13 and Novakovic gave the Golden Eagles the second set win on a kill.

Both teams kept the score close through the first 20 points of the third set as they were tied at 10-all before ORU came up with a five-point run with Oliveira, Novakovic and Souza leading the attack once again. Oliveira and Souza added three more kills to give ORU a 20-15 lead. The Golden Grizzlies came up with a 5-2 run of their own to bring the score to within two at 22-20 to force ORU to take a timeout. Oliveira and Novakovic came through with two kills to set the Golden Eagles up for match point as Oakland called a timeout. An OU attacking error gave ORU the set and match victory.

The Golden Eagles continue action in the Cooper Aerobics Center Sat., Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. against IPFW.
