- The Oral Roberts University volleyball team swept IPFW, 3-0,
(27-25, 25-17, 25-18) Saturday evening in Cooper Aerobics Center.
ORU picked up its second-straight win and snapped IPFW's five-match
win streak.
The Golden
Eagles are now 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the Summit League, while the
Mastodons fall to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in conference action. ORU
also stays undefeated against IPFW all-time, improving to 4-0.
ORU was led
by senior middle blocker JoJo Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil) who registered a
match-high 11 kills and hit an astounding .526 on the night, while
junior middle blocker Talita Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added nine
kills, six blocks and hit .421. Senior outside hitter Janete Ferreira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) tallied a
match-high 17 digs and senior setter Juliane Vieira (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) recorded
38 assists.
IPFW was led
by Jessica Miller's nine kills, while Ashley Dillon tallied seven
kills and six digs and Jessica Dominiak added 13 assists.
The Golden
Eagles finished the match with a .267 hitting percentage while IPFW
hit .098. The Golden Eagles also recorded 20 more kills (48-28),
four more blocks (14-10), 21 more digs (58-37) and 21 more assists
(45-24).
IPFW took a
10-6 lead in the first set before the Golden Eagles took off on a
7-3 run to tie up the set at 13-all. The Mastodons followed with a
6-2 run to take a four-point lead at 19-15. Souza and Santos led
the attack in the next five points and put the set back to within
one point. After a tie at 25-all Souza served out the next two
points to give the Golden Eagles the first set victory.
Both teams
matched each other in the next set point for point in the first 20
points to keep the score tied at 10-10. ORU pulled together a 5-3
run as Santos recorded a kill and Vieira smashed a service ace to
force IPFW to take a timeout. The Golden Eagles took another 5-2
run to go up 20-15, as sophomore libero Cassie Holmes (Tulsa, Okla.) served seven
straight points. A ball handling error by IPFW's Kylee Hervey gave
ORU a chance for set point at 26-16. Freshman Lauren Ophus (Tulsa, Okla.) recorded a kill for
the Golden Eagles set point and gave ORU a 2-0 lead heading to the
lockerroom.
Souza and
Vieira led the attack to start off the third set while IPFW
committed three errors to give ORU a 5-2 lead. After an IPFW
timeout, the Mastodons fought back with a 10-7 run to tie the set
up at 12-all. The Golden Eagles rode the serve of Ophus to take a
17-15 lead while a Santos kill and six IPFW errors gave ORU a shot
at the set and match point. IPFW's Dillon recorded a kill to make
the score 24-18 but Santos responded with a kill of her own to give
the Golden Eagles the set and match point for the win.
ORU heads
back out on the road next weekend, traveling to IUPUI on Friday,
Oct. 3 and plays at 6 p.m., while the Golden Eagles face Western
Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
