TULSAThere's no place like home.
With a four-year conference home winning streak on the line, Oral
Roberts University rallied at the end of regulation to force
overtime, and the Golden Eagles went 5-of-6 from the free throw
line in the final 41 seconds to hang on for a 68-65 Summit League
win over Oakland, Saturday at Mabee Center.
The win extended ORU's conference home winning streak to 30 games,
and also gave the Golden Eagles (6-11, 4-1 Summit) their first
three-game winning streak of the season. ORU hasn't lost a
conference home game since Jan. 29, 2005.
With Oakland (10-9, 3-3) leading 54-50 with 2:40 remaining in
regulation, ORU's
Robert Jarvis (Humble, Texas) trimmed the lead to
two points with a pair of free throws. A layup by Marcus
Lewis (Long Beach, Calif.) tied the game at 54-54 with 1:49 to
go.
Neither team scored in the final 90 seconds, though ORU had three
shots from under the basket in the final five seconds, but couldn't
convert.
ORU scored the first seven points in the extra period with a Lewis
layup giving the Golden Eagles a 61-54 lead with 3:56
remaining.
But Oakland didn't go away. After trading points, the Golden
Grizzlies' Erik Kangas hit a jumper and a three-pointer to pull
Oakland within 63-61 with 2:16 left.
Following a combined three consecutive empty possessions, Kyron
Stokes (Mansfield, Texas) made a pair of free throws with 41
second left to put ORU up, 65-61. Stokes made two more free throws
30 seconds later for a 67-62 lead and, after a Kangas trey with
five seconds to play, Jarvis sealed the game by making one-of-two
from the line.
Down for almost the entire second half, the Golden Eagles never let
Oakland get too far away. After the Golden Grizzlies gained a 35-29
lead on a Jonathon Jones layup with 14:51 left, ORU went on an 8-0
run to take a 37-35 win on a three-pointer by Jarvis with 13:24
left.
Oakland rallied and surged ahead when a layup by Jones and a trey
by Kangas made it 42-37 with 11:54 left. ORU came back again,
taking a 46-45 lead on a layup by Jarvis with 7:32 left, but
couldn't hold on to the lead.
Jarvis and Lewis led ORU with 17 points apiece. Jarvis was just
5-of-15 from the field, but made 6-of-7 at the line. Lewis grabbed
a game-high 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double in the last
six games.
Stokes came off the bench with 11 points, adding four rebounds and
two assists.
Kevin Ford (Portland, Ore.) was held under
double-digit points for the first time this season, but did score
seven with seven rebounds and four blocks.
Kangas led all scorers with 20 points, but was just 8-of-19 from
the field. Jones had 16 points, seven assists and five rebounds
before fouling out in overtime. Keith Benson scored 14 and Dan
Waterstradt chipped in with 11 and nine boards.
The Golden Eagles limited Oakland to 39.7 percent shooting for the
game, the third straight sub-40 percent effort by an ORU opponent.
The Golden Eagles shot 41.7 percent from the field, but were
16-of-21 from the free throw line, and turned it over just 11
times.
ORU returns to play when they visit IUPUI, 6 p.m., Thursday in
Indianapolis, Ind.
