Centenary Defeats ORU Women's Basketball, 67-56, Saturday

SHREVEPORT, La. – Despite a career-high scoring performance from senior guard Mariana Camargo (Blumenau, Brazil) the Oral Roberts women's basketball team suffered a 67-56 defeat to Centenary Saturday afternoon in Shreveport.

ORU falls to 11-10 overall and 4-6 in the Summit League, while Centenary picked up just its fourth win this season (4-17) and improves to 2-8 in conference action. The loss is the Golden Eagles first-ever to the Ladies, as they are now 11-1 against Centenary.

Camargo scored a game-high 22 points, which ties her current career-high in points. Junior forward Janae Voelker (Newton, Kan.) posted her 10th double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out and freshman guard Georgia Jones (Manchester, England) scored 13 points to round out the Golden Eagle scoring. Senior forward Monah Pegorari (Sao Paulo, Brazil) pulled down eight rebounds, while Camargo chipped in six boards.

Camargo started off the Golden Eagles with their first point of the game on a free throw at the 19:02 mark. Jones scored four straight points to put ORU up by five, 7-2, with 13:12 remaining, as the Ladies responded with a 6-2 run to keep the game within one point, 8-9. The Golden Eagles went back to a five point lead after a jumper from Jones and two Camargo free throws before a three-pointer from Centenary's Natasha Draganic tied up the game, 13-13, with 8:59 to play.

Both teams suffered a four and a-half minute scoring drought before Voelker put in a bucket to give ORU the lead back, 15-13, at the 4:23 mark. A Jackson layup tied up the game once again at 15-15, while Kelly Kindell (Schulter, Okla.) fired a three-pointer and six straight points from Voelker put the Golden Eagles up, 24-19, with 1:20 left in the half. Centenary's Bethany Joseph brought it back to a one-possession game, 21-24, with 31 seconds to game before Camargo found Jones for a quick layup at the buzzer, as the Golden Eagles went into the half with a 26-21 lead.

Voelker scored the first two points to start out the second half before Centenary came back on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to three, 27-30, with 16:02 to go. Camargo charged back with four points and put ORU up by, 36-27, with 12:12 remaining. The Ladies fought back and scraped away the lead on an 18-2 run in the next six minutes to take over the lead, 45-39, with 6 minutes to play. Back-to-back Centenary three-pointers kept the Ladies up, while a trey from Joseph and Karolina Zaloga would give CC its first double-digit lead of the game, 59-47, with 2:13 remaining and ORU trailed by 10 points or more the rest of the way.

The Golden Eagles shot 37.7 percent (20-53) from the field, including a season-low 9.1 percent (2-22) from three-point range and 50.0 percent (14-28) from the free throw line.

Centenary's bench scored 25 points compared to ORU's eight, as the Golden Eagles out-rebounded the Ladies 40-39.

Centenary shot 41.8 percent (23-55) from the field, including 29.4 percent (5-17) from behind the arc and 59.3 percent (16-27) from the charity stripe.

The Golden Eagles continue conference action on the road next weekend, play at IPFW on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 12:30 p.m. and then faces Oakland on Monday, Feb. 9 for a 6 p.m. (ET) contest.
