Robert Jarvis (Humble, Texas) led four players in
double-figures with 23 points, and Oral Roberts University
dominated the glass in earning a key 71-60 Summit League win over
IUPUI, Saturday at Mabee Center.
The win evened ORU's overall record at 13-13 and improved its
League mark to 11-3. The win, coupled with North Dakota State's
home loss to Southern Utah, puts the second-place Golden Eagles
one-and-a-half games behind league-leading NDSU with four games to
play.
Jarvis enjoyed one of his best shooting nights of the year, making
7-of-12 shots overall. After shooting just over 25 percent from
three-point range in his previous three games (7-27), Jarvis was
4-of-8 from downtown, and made 5-of-6 at the free throw line for
his 10th 20-point performance this season.
As a team, ORU owned a 36-22 rebounding edge over the Jaguars
(14-12, 7-8 Summit). The Golden Eagles grabbed 12 offensive
rebounds, including eight in the first half to help offset 40.7
percent shooting.
The first half featured three ties and seven lead changes before
ORU asserted itself. Down 21-18 with 5:37 left before halftime. The
Golden Eagles closed the half on a 14-6 run, taking a 32-27 lead
into the locker room.
IUPUI regained the lead before the first second-half media timeout,
opening the frame with an 8-1 run for a 35-33 lead with 17:17
remaining in the game. The lead changed hands twice more before ORU
took control for good.
Andre Hardy (San Diego, Calif.) started a 7-1 run
with a layup for the Golden Eagles, and followed on ORU's next
possession by making one of two free throws for a 42-41 lead with
12:06 left. A three-pointer by Dominique
Morrison (Kansas City, Mo.) at 11:26 made it 45-41, and Jarvis
made the second of two free throws with 10:32 remaining for a 46-41
ORU lead.
The Jags twice cut the lead to three points before ORU surged down
the stretch. Another trey by Morrison gave the Eagles a 52-46 lead
with 8:52 to play, and
Marcus Lewis (Long Beach, Calif.) scored
four straight points for a 56-48 advantage with 6:55 left.
IUPUI cut the lead down to three points one last time when Robert
Glenn made it 61-58 with 3:35 to go. But a layup and three-pointer
by Jarvis made it 66-58 with 2:28 left, to all but put the game
away. ORU made five free throws in the final 1:34 to secure the
victory.
Lewis, Morrison and
Kevin Ford (Portland, Ore.) joined Jarvis
in double figures. Lewis scored 14 points, including a 6-of-8
effort from the line, and added a game-high nine rebounds and three
assists. Morrison scored 11, making 3-of-5 from three-point range,
and Ford chipped in 11 points, five boards and two steals. Kelvin
Sango (Tulsa, Okla.) failed to score, but dished a career-high
eight assists.
Glenn led the Jaguars with 23 points, while Leroy Nobles and Alex
Young each scored 13.
ORU shot 46.7 percent for the game, including 55.6 percent in the
second half. The Golden Eagles also made 8-of-17 from three-point
range, and were 21-of-31 from the free throw line.
IUPUI shot 48 percent overall, but was only 5-of-15 from beyond the
arc, and made just 11 trips to the line, converting nine
attempts.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they visit Southern Utah, 8
p.m., CST, Thursday, in Cedar City, Utah.
