ROCHESTER, Mich. - UMKC's John Bayron Sosa was named Summit League
Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate Brian Quintana claimed
Defensive Player of the Year honors to headline the league's 2010
men's soccer awards. IUPUI freshman forward Jeff Keyler earned the
Newcomer of the Year award and UMKC coach Rick Benben was selected
as Coach of the Year. In addition to collecting three of the four
individual awards, the league champion Kangaroos placed a trio of
players on both the first and second all-league teams.
Sosa, a senior midfielder, scored six goals and added two assists
for 14 total points during the season and became UMKC's third
consecutive Offensive Player of the Year recipient following Brian
Harris in 2008 and Bryan Perez last season. The senior forward
notched a hat trick on Oct. 23, setting league highs for goals and
points, while helping UMKC to a league-best 1.35 goals per
game.
Quintana, a senior defender, buoyed a UMKC defense that recorded
the league's lowest goals against average (0.85) and allowed the
fewest goals (15).
Keyler, the Newcomer of the Year, ranks fourth in The Summit League
in assists (4), fifth in points (13) and sixth in goals (5). Benben
guided UMKC to its first No. 1 seed and first regular season title
since 2003, to earn his fourth career Coach of the Year award.
Three of the four Summit League tournament qualifiers, UMKC,
Oakland and Oral Roberts, each placed a league-high three players
on the first team. Joining Sosa and Quintana was Kangaroo teammate
Jimmy Simon (7 G, 15 pts.) while the Golden Grizzlies trio
consisted of midfielder Winston Henderson (4 pts.), defender Vuk
Popovic (1 pt.) and goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt (1.33 GAA, 7 ShO)
and the Golden Eagles were represented by midfielder Sterling
Copeland (4 G, 11 pts.), defender
Jon Gann
(2 G, 6 pts.) and forward Jarrett
Hamilton (6 G, 16 pts.). Rounding out the first team were IPFW
forward Max Touloute, the league-leader in goals (8) and points
(17), and IUPUI defender Weston Hawkins (1 pt.).
Three more Kangaroos were named to the second team led by
goalkeeper Ken Cooper, who owns a league-high eight shutouts and
ranks second with a 0.88 goals against average, midfielder Tom
Black (1 G, 4 pts.) and forward David Sarabia (3 G, 9 pts.).
Western Illinois also had a trio of honorees on the second team in
defender Kooten Johnson (2 pts.), midfielder Mariano Leo (1 G, 2
pts.) and goalkeeper Andy Ryan (1.23 GAA, league-high 92 saves).
Additional second team nods went to IUPUI's Perez Agaba (4 G, 10
pts.), Centenary's RB Asenime and Heath Cox (6 G, 12 pts.), IPFW's
Jorge Ramirez (2G, 7 pts.) and IUPUI's Yogi Snider (3 pts.).
Joining Keyler and Leo on the all-newcomer team were Western
Illinois' Charlie Bales (1 G, 4 pts.), Oakland's Andrew Barrett (1
G) and Miche'le Lipari (2 G, 5 pts.), IUPUI's Galen Cassady (1G),
UMKC's Donovann Castro and Jeffrey Stezovsky (2 pts.) and Oral
Roberts' trio of Johnny
Chavez (2 G, 5 pts.), Marco
Hernandez (1 pt.) and Daniel
Premenko (2G, 4 pts.).
The 2010 Summit League Championship presented by American Airlines
begins Friday, with a pair of semifinals games at the Oakland
University Soccer Field in Rochester, Mich. Top-seeded UMKC faces
No. 4 seed Oral Roberts in the opening match at 11 a.m. EST while
No. 2 IUPUI and No. 3 Oakland meet at 2 p.m. The winners will meet
Sunday at noon for The Summit League Championship and an automatic
berth to the NCAA College Cup.
