It was in the paint where Kansas (10-1) flexed their muscles and gained an advantage over ORU. Carolyn Davis was 10-for-15 from the floor and scored 25 points, while fellow post Aishah Sutherland added 18 points. Both players benefitted from the play of Angel Goodrich, who tallied 14 assists.
Davis led all players with 11 rebounds. All but five of her points came in the first half, leading the Jayhawks to a 41-29 advantage at the break.
Despite the loss, there were plenty of bright spots for the Golden Eagles. ORU outrebounded Kansas, 39-37, becoming just the second team this season to beat KU on the glass.
Wednesday also saw a resurgent performance from senior Georgia Jones, who was 2-for-4 from three point range and scored 12 points in addition to accumulating seven assists.
Luper went over the 20-point mark for the ninth time this season. No other Summit Legue player has scored 20 points more than four times this season.
The first half was characterized by huge scoring runs from both clubs. KU provided the first spurt, taking a 15-6 lead on a CeCe Harper layup with 14:45 left in the first half.
But ORU fought back, staging an 11-0 run, capped by two straight Luper field goals that gave the road team a 17-15 edge at the 9:56 mark.
Next it was KU's turn for a rally. The Jayhawks took off on a 12-0 run late in the half, with Monica Engelman providing the final basket, to take a 31-21 lead with 4:28 on the clock.
The two sides played a fairly even game in the half's closing minutes, with the Jayhawks taking a 12-point lead into the locker room.
Kansas slowly wore the Golden Eagles down in the second half. Another basket by Harper pushed the lead over the 15-point line, at 54-38, with 15:52 on the clock.
Natalie Knight scored the bucket that gave KU their first 20-point lead, a pull-up jumper with 9:50 left to make the score 63-43.
The lead never grew larger than 22 for Kansas as ORU played the home team close down the stretch. Freshmen got in on the act in the final minutes for Jerry Finkbeiner's team, with Delaney Scrivner scoring five points and Mariah Miles tallying the game's final deuce.
The loss is ORU's fifth in their last seven games.
Kansas is now 11-0 all-time against Oral Roberts, with eight of those wins coming in Lawrence.
The Golden Eagles will next play on Dec. 29, in a crucial Summit League affair against South Dakota. Tip-off in Vermillion, S.D in booked for 7 pm CT.
