Oral Roberts University made quick work of IUPUI on Friday
night, sweeping the Summit League opponent, 3-0. The victory is the
third in a row for the Golden Eagles, who have also won 10 of their
last 11 matches.
ORU (10-4, 3-1 Summit League) hit an impeccable .343 on the
evening, getting solid contributions from a host of offensive
talents. Joana Gruber led the Eagles with 11 kills, while Olivia Ophus and Sheina Fernandes added 10 each. Elizabeth McVicker added nine at a team-high .444
clip.
Bruna Silva led ORU in digs for the 13th time
in 14 matches, with 15 on the evening. Ophus contributed 13 with
Gruber had ten, giving both players their second double-doubles of
the season.
Kalyse Reimbold led the Jaguars (5-10, 0-4 Summit League) with 13
kills and hit .444, while the IUPUI squad hit .202 as a group.
The win furthers ORU's mastery over their long-time Summit League
rival; The Golden Eagles are now 29-4 all-time against IUPUI and
have beaten the Jaguars in six of the last seven matches between
the teams.
ORU trailed early in the first set, 11-7, before two straight
service aces by McVicker launched a five-point run to turn the game
in ORU's favor. Later Gruber broke an 18-all tie with a kill, and
Ophus ended the game with a kill, giving ORU the 25-21 win.
Sheera Sirola's team opened the second game
with a 4-0 lead after kills by Gruber, McVicker and Fernandes.
Later, two kills from Gruber were key parts of a 4-0 run that moved
the lead to 13-5, and the junior added two more in the final three
points of the set to win it for the Golden Eagles, 25-23.
Gruber notched eight of her 11 kills in the game. As a team, ORU
blasted 20 kills in the second game.
The Golden Eagles slowly built a substantial lead in the third and
final game, taking it to 11-5 on a Gruber service ace midway
through. Laura Taylor stretched the edge to 16-8, with a kill
later in the game, and after a rally attempt failed, the game and
match ended on an IUPUI error that clinched the win with a third
game score of 25-19.
The final game was the most efficient of the evening for ORU; the
swung at a .357 clip.
Taylor had another quality night at the setter position, with 41
assists and seven digs.
ORU's Summit League road trip continues Saturday night when they
face Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill. First serve is scheduled for
7 pm.
