Golden Eagles Sweep IUPUI for Third Straight Win

Box Score INDIANAPOLIS -

Oral Roberts University made quick work of IUPUI on Friday night, sweeping the Summit League opponent, 3-0. The victory is the third in a row for the Golden Eagles, who have also won 10 of their last 11 matches.

ORU (10-4, 3-1 Summit League) hit an impeccable .343 on the evening, getting solid contributions from a host of offensive talents. Joana Gruber led the Eagles with 11 kills, while Olivia Ophus and Sheina Fernandes added 10 each. Elizabeth McVicker added nine at a team-high .444 clip.

Bruna Silva led ORU in digs for the 13th time in 14 matches, with 15 on the evening. Ophus contributed 13 with Gruber had ten, giving both players their second double-doubles of the season.

Kalyse Reimbold led the Jaguars (5-10, 0-4 Summit League) with 13 kills and hit .444, while the IUPUI squad hit .202 as a group.

The win furthers ORU's mastery over their long-time Summit League rival; The Golden Eagles are now 29-4 all-time against IUPUI and have beaten the Jaguars in six of the last seven matches between the teams.

ORU trailed early in the first set, 11-7, before two straight service aces by McVicker launched a five-point run to turn the game in ORU's favor. Later Gruber broke an 18-all tie with a kill, and Ophus ended the game with a kill, giving ORU the 25-21 win.

Sheera Sirola's team opened the second game with a 4-0 lead after kills by Gruber, McVicker and Fernandes. Later, two kills from Gruber were key parts of a 4-0 run that moved the lead to 13-5, and the junior added two more in the final three points of the set to win it for the Golden Eagles, 25-23.

Gruber notched eight of her 11 kills in the game. As a team, ORU blasted 20 kills in the second game.

The Golden Eagles slowly built a substantial lead in the third and final game, taking it to 11-5 on a Gruber service ace midway through. Laura Taylor stretched the edge to 16-8, with a kill later in the game, and after a rally attempt failed, the game and match ended on an IUPUI error that clinched the win with a third game score of 25-19.

The final game was the most efficient of the evening for ORU; the swung at a .357 clip.

Taylor had another quality night at the setter position, with 41 assists and seven digs.

ORU's Summit League road trip continues Saturday night when they face Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill. First serve is scheduled for 7 pm.
