ORU Evens Season Series with UMKC, 83-70

Box Score

TULSA, Okla. -

After a sluggish first half, the floodgates opened up for Oral Roberts University after halftime and the Golden Eagles thumped UMKC, 83-70, on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Center. Kevi Luper led ORU (14-7, 8-2 Summit League) with 31 points, marking her fifth game this season with more than 30.

The win is ORU's fourth in a row.

Luper's 31 points give her 2,058 for her collegiate career, which surpasses former Golden Eagles legend Elisha Turek for third on both the ORU and Summit League career scoring lists.

The Adair native, just a junior, was 13-for-23 from the floor and added five steals.

The supporting cast came out in full force for the Golden Eagles. Jordan Pyle added 14 points, while Georgia Jones and Jaci Bigham chipped in 11 each to go with Bigham's six rebounds.

Dominique Allen closed the game on a tear and finished with ten points in the win.

UMKC (14-8, 5-5 Summit League) topped ORU on Dec. 31, 92-79, behind 43 points from Dayon Hall-Jones and a team shooting percentage of 56.5%. But the 'Roos could not approach those totals on Saturday. Hall-Jones finished with 14 points and the 'Roos shot just 36.8%.

Kim Nezianya also scored 14 points for the 'Roos, and her 15 rebounds led all players.

An aggressive ORU defense forced UMKC into a barrage of early mistakes, turning the 'Roos into a shell of the team that played so well on New Year's Eve. UMKC missed 16 of their first 18 shots and turned the ball over nine times in the game's first ten minutes. Luper took advantage, scoring her 10th point at the 9:40 mark to give the home team a 19-6 lead.

But the Golden Eagles could not stretch the lead further, as ORU struggled to put their guests away. A Pyle basket at the 4:16 mark of the half put ORU on top, 26-16. But the 'Roos rallied and were down just 31-27 after 20 minutes of play.

The teams stayed close throughout the early stages of the 2nd half, with Luper providing a highlight at the 15:01 mark. The junior drilled a jumper to reach 2,048 career points, passing Turek for 3rd place on both the ORU and Summit League career scoring lists. The basket gave the Golden Eagles a 41-32 lead.

Luper left the game with her fourth personal foul at the 11:36 mark, but a renewed post attack was able to keep ORU afloat. Back-to-back baskets from Pyle and Amber Carver reestablished ORU's double-digit lead, at 56-45.

That lead swelled to 70-56 minutes later on a Jones three. And at the 4:01 mark, Savanna Buck hit a dagger from the corner to stretch the gap to 73-58.

Luper took over from there, scoring eight points in the game's final 3:25.

ORU honored all-time Summit League scoring leader Krista Ragan during halftime of the victory by retiring her No. 11 jersey. The Indianola native scored 2,152 points during her Golden Eagle career, which ended in 2002.

ORU is now 29-19 against UMKC. With the Golden Eagles moving to the Southland Conference in 2012-13, the game was perhaps the last meeting between the longtime Summit League foes.

Jerry Finkbeiner's team will close out their four-game home stand on Monday night, when they host South Dakota. Tip time is set for 7:05 pm CT.
