Box Score
TULSA, Okla. - Joana Gruber
tallied 12 kills and Sheina Fernandes added eight total blocks as Oral
Roberts University swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 3-0, on
Saturday at the Cooper Aerobics Center. The Golden Eagles took the
three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-17.
The win avenges a 3-0 loss that ORU (12-13, 8-6 SLC) suffered at
the hands of the Islanders (16-9, 8-5 SLC) on September 15, earning
Sheera Sirola's team a season split with the
Southland Conference rival.
Gruber hit .375 in her team-best performance, while Fernandes added
six kills to her eight-block masterpiece. Freshman Kylie Johnson led ORU with 16 digs, while Bruna Silva added 15.
Setter Laura Taylor contributed another all-around dominant
performance in Saturday's win. Two days after posting her first
career triple-double, the junior tallied five kills, seven digs, 31
assists and four blocks.
Ivy Baresh led the Islanders with 11 kills, while Logen Bourque
posted a team-best 11 digs to go with 21 assists.
ORU hit .297 as a team and posted 14 blocks, while AMCC hit just
.059 and mustered only three blocks.
ORU won the first four points of the match thanks to a Gruber kill
and three Islander errors. After the visitors came back to lead,
Fernandes started another 4-0 rally with a kill, helping ORU to a
13-11 edge. Later a Jessica Pancratz service ace stretched the advantage
to 23-17, and an error by the Islanders gave ORU a 25-19 win.
The Golden Eagles came out hot again at the start of the second
set, taking a 6-1 lead. A Tatum Fredeen kill made the score 9-3, forcing a
timeout, but ORU continued to dominate. A late 5-0 run, keyed by
two more kills from Fredeen, stretched the lead to 22-16, and the
Golden Eagles won by a count of 25-20.
A kill by Gruber swung momentum in ORU's favor early in the third
set, starting a 4-0 run that gave ORU a 7-5 lead. Later Silva
tallied an ace to push the score to 12-8, and Gruber polished off
another kill to give the home side a 20-12 edge. The Golden Eagles
clinched the match with a 25-17 win.
With the win, ORU capped off an important home stand with a 2-1
record. Sirola's club knocked off SLC leader Central Arkansas on
Tuesday, 3-2, before falling to second-place Sam Houston State,
3-2, on Thursday and downing the fourth-place Islanders on
Saturday.
The Golden Eagles open their final regular season road trip of 2012
on Thursday, November 1, when they take on McNeese State. Match
time in Lake Charles, La., is booked for 7 pm CT.
