Oral Roberts University tallied a three-set sweep of Nicholls
State on Saturday afternoon, running their winning streak to two
matches. The Golden Eagles hit .317 as a team and won by scores of
25-17, 25-7 and 25-16.
ORU (6-9, 2-2 Southland Conference) featured a balanced all-around
attack. Tatum Fredeen and Sheina Fernandes each posted 11 kills, with Fernandes
hitting .667, and Laura Taylor had 29 set assists. Bruna Silva and Luara Rosa each tallied 14 digs on the defensive end,
while Fernandes added three blocks.
The Colonels (5-8, 2-2 SLC) hit just .068 as a team. Jessica
Addicks had a team-high seven kills, and Jeanne Logarbo led NSU
with 11 digs.
ORU took control of the opening set with an early 9-1 run. Fredeen
launched back-to-back kills to start the run and ended the rally
with another blast to give the Golden Eagles a 10-5 lead. They went
on to win the set, 25-17.
The home team scored the first seven points of the second set, with
Kylie Johnson notching three kills over the
stretch. Later, a 5-0 run on the strength of Rosa and Fredeen kills
propelled ORU to a 16-4 lead, and Shelby Robb smacked kills on the final two points to
clinch a 25-7 win.
ORU took control of the third set with a 4-0 run, punctuated by a
Johnson service ace, to take a 12-10 lead. Later Rosa added two
kills as part of another 4-0 run that finished with ORU ahead,
17-13. The Golden Eagles scored the final three points of the match
and won the last set, 25-16.
The comfortable margin allowed Sheera Sirola to cycle many fresh faces into the
match, and the results were outstanding. In her first extended
action of the season, Robb posted four kills and a dig, while
freshman Jovana Poljasevic notched two kills and a set assist
in her first match in front of the ORU home crowd.
ORU is now 3-0 all-time against Nicholls.
Sirola's squad returns to the court on Thursday night, when they
face Stephen F. Austin. Match time in Nacogdoches, Texas is set for
6:30 pm.
