TULSA, Okla. - The Oral Roberts University
volleyball team was unable to hold off a late rally from Denver
Sunday afternoon falling 3-2 in the regular season home finale.
The match picked up excitement from the start as both teams
battled back and forth in the first two sets. The Pioneers took the
first set 29-27, while ORU pulled out a 31-29 win in set two before
dominating the third set, 25-19.
However, unforced errors caused the Golden Eagles to stumble in
the fourth and fifth sets as 16 service errors eventually doomed
ORU.
The Turning Point
Both squads were impressive on the offensive side of the net on
Sunday. However, Denver was able to edge the Golden Eagles in the
fourth set to tie the match and send it into a fifth and deciding
set. The Pioneers held the momentum and cruised to a 15-8 win in
the final set.
The Leaders
Oral Roberts: Laura
Milos had a team-high 23 kills while Lucija
Bojanjac recorded a season-high 65 assists.
Denver: Moni Corrujedo led all players with 24
kills while teammate Nola Basey added 20 kills. Bailey Karst
finished with 58 assists.
Inside the Box Score
- Nika
Mostahinic and Sara
Pope each recorded double-doubles for ORU. Mostahinic finished
with 11 kills and 13 digs while Pope tallied 10 kills and 14
digs.
- Lucija
Bojanjac finished with a season-best 65 assists and the highest
assist mark for ORU since Juliane Vieira tallied 66 assists at
Western Illinois on Oct. 3, 2009.
- ORU saw five players finish with double figure kills in the
loss: Shelby
Cox (15), Mostahinic (11), Milos (23), Pope (10) and Jovana
Poljasevic (12).
News & Notes
- ORU finishes the regular season with a 6-2 record
at home.
- ORU will end the regular season at South Dakota State Friday and
North Dakota State Saturday.
- The Golden Eagles sit in a three-way tie at fourth in the Summit
League standings at 7-7 with North Dakota State and IPFW as the top
six teams advance to the Summit League Championships. ORU won the
first meeting vs NDSU on October 12, 3-1, while IPFW swept the
season series with the Golden Eagles.
