Golden Eagles Fall in Five to UND

TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts volleyball team forced a decisive fifth set Friday night before falling to North Dakota (28-26, 18-25, 23-25, 25-18, 12-15) at the Aerobics Center.

 

The Golden Eagles got the final frame off to a fantastic start leading the Fighting Hawks by scoring four of the first five points and built an 11-8 advantage. Three straight errors by ORU helped UND to a 5-0 run and the visitors closed out the decision winning seven of the final eight points.

 

CeCe Madison and Laura Shoopman each put away six kills in the opening frame as the Golden Eagles rallied back from a large deficit late in the set taking an 8-3 run to win, 28-26. The duo was joined by Sylvia Lawson with double-double performances on the night.

 

UND answered by tallying the final six points of the second stanza to even the match. It came at a significant cost as ORU was forced to play without libero Sarah Thiessen when she exited with an injury earlier in the second set. Katarina Mikulic returned to the lineup Friday and filled in during the set before Inka Inkret took over as libero for the final three frames.

 

The Fighting Hawks scored six-straight points in the middle of set three and never gave up the lead, despite 11 tie scores and eight lead changes. The Golden Eagles fought back in the fourth set as Inkret served an 8-0 stretch helping force a fifth frame only to fall late in the finale.

 

Inside the Box Score

  • Shoopman paced the ORU offense with 18 kills and completed the double-double with 10 digs, while posting a solo block and three block assists. The freshman added a team-high four service aces as the Golden Eagles reached double digits behind 10 aces.
  • Madison registered a 16-kill, 15-dig double-double and Bri Greenlee chipped in 10 kills. Taylan Nero added eight kills and three block assists.
  • Lawson tallied 49 set assists and 10 digs for the double-double effort Friday.
  • Inkret played the final three sets at libero and finished with a match-leading 22 digs to set a new career high, while Mikulic ended with 13.
  • Thiessen finished her shortened night with nine digs, in less than two sets, as ORU totaled 88 for the contest.
