TULSA, Okla. – Montserrat Brotons and Keni Jo Lippe each recorded a double-double as the Oral Roberts women's basketball team defeated Western Illinois, 71-60, Thursday evening at the Mabee Center.
The Golden Eagles started off going down by as much as five in the first quarter. The Leathernecks were led by Olivia Kaufmann with 13 in the first 10 minutes and a 50 percent shooting average from the field. ORU cut it to four to trail 19-15 as Brotons and Lippe had four points each.
ORU tied the game with 6:41 to go after two made free-throws by Rylie Torrey and then took a two-point lead 20 seconds later. Back-to-back three-point buckets for the Leathernecks put WIU back on top by four. After back-and-forth play Western Illinois went back up at five and went in to halftime with a 36-31 lead. The Golden Eagles shot 45 percent in the second and upped their overall percent to 39 percent.
Although the Golden Eagles trailed by as much as six in the third, defense was the theme. ORU held WIU to 17 third quarter points and went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead with 7:16 to play. After going down by six again, ORU clawed back and tied the game with 1:37 left. The Leathernecks maintained a two-point lead to end the third.
A 12-1 run started the fourth for ORU to go up by 12 with 3:46 to play. The ORU defense held WIU scoreless for 4:06 and then another 1:56. The Golden Eagles held the Leathernecks to just eight points in the final quarter and out-score WIU, 21-8. Sarah Garvie led ORU with 10 fourth quarter points going 3-for-6 from long-range. Western Illinois went 2-for-14 overall in the fourth as the Golden Eagles shot 43 percent and end with a 71-60 advantage.

Oral Roberts: Brotons led the team with 18 points, while Lippe had 12 rebounds.
Western Illinois: Kaufmann scored 20 points and Evan Zars grabbed 11 rebounds.
