SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Oral Roberts baseball team only allowed two hits in a 2-0 win at Missouri State Tuesday afternoon at Hammons Field in Springfield, Missouri.
A staff day on the mound saw seven ORU pitchers given responsibility in Tuesday's game. Amongst the seven pitchers, a season low, two hits were allowed to Missouri State. It was the first shutout of the season for ORU.
For the second-straight game a Golden Eagle has gone perfect at the plate. Adam Oviedo (3-for-3) got the first hit of the game for the Golden Eagles in the top of the first. Blake Hall followed when he reached on an error and advanced to second, moving Oviedo to third. Caleb Denny reached on an error to score Oviedo, unearned, to give ORU an early 1-0 lead.
Anthony Martinez started the fifth inning with a leadoff hit. Ryan Cash hit a single into right to advance Martinez to third. With no outs, Jake McMurray grounded in to a double-play, but Martinez was able to score and give ORU a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Golden Eagles saw bases loaded with two outs as Kaleb McCullough came in to pitch. On a full count pitch, Logan Geah flied out to second and ORU held a 2-0 lead going in to the ninth.
Missouri State got the tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, after the ninth walk of the game was issued to the Bears. MSU hit a pop-up to Oviedo at shortstop to end the game and seal a 2-0 Golden Eagle victory.
Turning Point
Missouri State had bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth with two outs and could've tied the game with runners in scoring position, but McCullough came in to pitch and eventually earned his fourth career save. The Bears stranded nine runners on base in the game.
Inside the Box Score
- Oviedo went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a sacrifice to score a run.
- Martinez scored the second Golden Eagle run of the game and went 1-for-3 at the plate.
- Coffey started the game and pitched three-straight innings. He issued one walk and a game high three strikeouts. Combined, the Golden Eagles issued eight strikeouts.
