OMAHA, Neb. – It was a matchup of the last two undefeated Summit League teams Tuesday, but the Oral Roberts volleyball team saw its four-match win streak stopped at Omaha (20-25, 14-25, 25-27) inside Baxter Arena.
Three of the first four points of the match went to the Golden Eagles after forcing consecutive errors by the Mavericks. ORU used a 3-0 run to take an 8-7 advantage as
Trinity Freeman had back-to-back kills and combined on a block with
Jaxie Wakley to cap the run. Omaha overcame an 11-10 deficit behind a 6-2 burst and added a 4-0 run late to hold on to a 25-20 set win, despite 10 tie scores and four lead changes.
Freeman found the floor early in set two to even the score, 4-4, but it was the Mavericks that tallied the next three points and stretched their lead to 10-6 until a swing by Wakley. Another 3-0 run by the home side made it a 13-7 deficit for ORU before
Aixa Vigil dropped in a kill and Freeman joined
Sakira LaCour on a block closing the gap. Omaha responded by posting the next six points for a 19-9 cushion and closed the frame, 25-14.
The third set was back and forth from the beginning and featured 13 tie scores and eight lead changes in total. After a solo block from Wakley helped ORU to a 9-8 edge, the Mavericks put up six of the next seven points for a 14-10 lead until an attack error followed by a LaCour kill pulled the Golden Eagles within two. ORU cut the margin to one on three different occasions and LaCour powered a kill and added a block with Vigil as the visitors erased a two-point deficit and took a 23-22 lead on a kill from
Bryanne Soares. ORU had a chance to extend the match earning two sets points, but could not hold off UNO at the finish falling 27-25.
