TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts volleyball team dropped its home finale in three sets to Omaha (20-25, 16-25, 20-25) from the Cooper Aerobics Center Thursday night as the Mavericks clinched The Summit League title.
The Golden Eagles used consecutive points from
Trinity Freeman and
Aixa Vigil to even the opening set, 3-3, and got a solo block by
Jaxie Wakley to make it a 6-5 score. ORU erased a three-point deficit as
Sakira LaCour caught fire putting away three kills in a four-point stretch. With the score tied 13-13, Omaha successfully challenged a point to reverse the score and used the momentum to take a 17-14 edge. Back-to-back swings by Freeman helped pull ORU within two, 21-19. The Mavericks called a timeout and regrouped on the way to a 25-20 set win.
Omaha jumped to a 3-0 advantage in the second set before the Golden Eagles closed the gap to 7-6. The visitors took advantage of a five-point burst taking a 14-8 lead until LaCour found the floor again, but it was the Mavericks that continued to press holding a 21-10 cushion. Three-consecutive kills from
Kaia Dunford while facing set point against were not enough as ORU dropped the frame, 25-16.
The first lead of the night came for ORU when
Bryanne Soares registered a solo block for a 4-3 advantage in the third stanza. The score was tied 13 different times in the frame as neither side could generate more than a two-point lead until Omaha pushed in front, 13-10. The Golden Eagles fought back to even the score as Freeman, Vigil and Soares all hit kills and the match continued to go back and forth. The Mavericks turned a 19-19 tie into a five-point advantage and closed the match, 25-20.
Inside the Box Score
- LaCour was relentless on the offensive side of the net as the junior buried nine of her 15 swings for a .533 hitting percentage.
- Vigil narrowly missed a double-double as she posted 10 kills and nine digs.
- Freeman and Dunford added seven and five kills, respectively, while Dunford reached double figures in digs totaling 10.
- Soares completed her team-best 12th double-double of the year with 24 set assists and 13 digs along with a solo block and two block assists.
- Sarah Thiessen played her final match at the Aerobics Center and turned in a 16-dig performance to pace the Golden Eagles.
