BEAUMONT, Texas – It was a perfect opening weekend for the Oral Roberts volleyball team as it closed the Katrinka Crawford Invitational with a three-set sweep of Prairie View A&M (25-11, 25-18, 25-11) Saturday at McDonald Gym.
The Golden Eagles came out firing in the first set and posted 14 kills without an error for an incredible .636 hitting percentage to take the frame, 25-11. ORU scored eight of the first 10 points and stretched the lead into double figures, 17-7, on consecutive kills by
Rami Mose and
Sakira LaCour. After a
Mackenzie Edwards and
Trinity Freeman block, the advantage swelled to 20-7 before closing it out, 25-11.
The second set again belonged to ORU as it stayed in front the entire stanza thanks to a 5-2 burst opening the action. The Lady Panthers pulled within two, 10-8, but a 7-2 run by the Golden Eagles put the set out of reach winning, 25-18.
ORU did not waste any time taking control of the final set scoring a 6-2 advantage to begin capped on back-to-back kills from
Kaia Dunford. PVAMU cut the deficit down to 11-8 before the Golden Eagles regained momentum tallying 13 of the next 15 points, including an elusive dig/kill by freshman
Breanna Rivas. ORU secured the sweep by forcing an attack error to end the match, 25-11.
Dunford was named tournament MVP, while LaCour and
Sarah Thiessen joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
Inside the Box Score
- The Golden Eagles' attack could not be stopped as it went off for 40 kills and committed just six errors recording a .430 hitting percentage in the contest.
- For the third-straight match, Dunford led the offense totaling 13 kills on 21 swings for a .571 hitting percentage.
- Freeman reached double-digit kills for the second time during the weekend finishing with 11 and hit at a .429 clip. The freshman led the team with five block assists.
- LaCour ended the day with seven kills and zero errors hitting .636 overall.
- Bryanne Soares paced ORU in set assists and digs posting 18 and nine, respectively.
- Thiessen registered seven digs and seven set assists.
- Edwards made her debut for the Golden Eagles and promptly buried a block in her first point on the court.
