GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Despite double-doubles from
Kaia Dunford and
Kalena Vaivai, the Oral Roberts volleyball team fell in straight sets (19-25, 19-25, 14-25) on the road at North Dakota Saturday morning inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
Dunford logged her team-leading seventh double-double of the season as the junior recorded a match-best 10 kills and 10 digs. Vaivai dished out 13 assists and scooped up 11 UND attacks for her fifth double-double of the year.Â
In the opening set, the Golden Eagles used two different 3-0 runs to take a 10-7 lead. The Fighting Hawks responded with a 5-1 stretch to jump in front 12-11.
Trinity Freeman ended the UND run with a kill and sparked a 3-0 surge for ORU as they regained the lead, 14-12. Momentum shifted in favor of the Fighting Hawks as a 12-2 run gave them a 24-16 advantage. The Golden Eagles tallied the next three points but it wasn't enough as UND took the first game, 25-19.
Following a 4-0 run from UND in the second stanza, the Golden Eagles responded with three consecutive points to trim the deficit to 11-8. The Fighting Hawks answered with an 8-0 stretch to take command of the set as they held a 19-8 lead. ORU attempted to rally as they used a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 21-15. Despite scoring four of the final seven points of the set, the Golden Eagles fell 25-19.
UND raced out to 6-0 start in the final stanza and used runs of 4-0, 3-0 and 5-0 en route to claiming the set, 25-14, and match.Â
