TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts volleyball team fell in straight sets (14-25, 23-25, 14-25) Thursday evening to South Dakota State inside the Cooper Aerobics Center.
Trinity Freeman led the offensive attack for the Golden Eagles as the sophomore put down 11 kills on 25 swings for a .360 attack percentage. On the backrow, Breanna Rivas scooped up 18 Jackrabbit attacks to lead all players.
After the two sides traded the first six points, the Jackrabbits used an 11-2 run to take a 14-5 advantage before a Bryanne Soares kill put an end to the stretch. The Golden Eagles drew within seven, 18-11, following a 3-0 run that was sparked by a Freeman kill. SDSU responded with seven of the final 11 points to claim the opening set 25-14.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 start in the second stanza behind two service aces from Kalena Vaivai. The Jackrabbits later responded with a 7-2 stretch to claim the lead, 11-8. A 6-1 surge by the Golden Eagles allowed them to regain the advantage, 17-14. After the lead changed hands two more times, SDSU closed the set on a 5-1 run to claim the game, 25-23.
Behind a 6-1 run, the Jackrabbits jumped in front 10-6 in the final set. SDSU's lead later increased to six, 15-9, courtesy of a 4-0 stretch. A service error stopped the Jackrabbits' momentum momentarily as the Golden Eagles registered three straight points. SDSU answered with 10 of the final 12 points to take the set, 25-14, and the match.
Match Notes
- Thursday's match marked the 28th meeting all-time between ORU and SDSU.
- Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles still lead the all-time series, 19-9.
- Kaia Dunford contributed with nine kills on the night.
- Vaivai dished out a team-best 16 assists, while Soares totaled 11.Â
