NORMAL, Ill. – Despite a career-high 18 digs from
Breanna Rivas, the Oral Roberts volleyball team fell in straight sets (13-25, 19-25, 20-25) to Green Bay in their final match of the Redbird Classic Saturday afternoon inside Redbird Arena.
Kaia Dunford topped the Golden Eagles in kills with 11 to go along with nine digs. In her first collegiate start at the libero position,
Kyla Randall scooped up 14 Phoenix attacks. At the net,
Sakira LaCour recorded five blocks, while
Trinity Freeman tallied four.
Green Bay scored nine of the first 10 points of the opening set to take full command. During the run, the Phoenix controlled the net as they recorded four blocks. Following a double block by LaCour and Freeman, the Golden Eagles drew within seven, 17-10, but that was as close as they could get as Green Bay claimed the opening set, 25-13.
ORU registered three of the first four points of the second set to take their first lead of the afternoon. Green Bay answered with six straight points to jump in front, 17-13.
Kedron Burk stopped the bleeding momentarily with a kill but the Phoenix continued to press, using a 4-0 run to take a 21-14 advantage.Three consecutive points by the Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 23-19 but the Phoenix scored the final two points to take the set.
After a back-and-forth start to the third, the Phoenix used a 3-0 spurt to take a 12-8 lead.
Jeslyn Spencer responded with a kill and sparked a 6-0 run, giving ORU a 14-12 advantage. Green Bay regained the lead, 17-15, with a 5-1 run but the Golden Eagles answered with back-to-back points to level the score. The Phoenix closed the set on a 7-2 run to take the stanza, 25-20, and match.
Match Notes
- Saturday's contest marked the first meeting between the two programs since 1999.
- The all-time series is now tied 1-1.
- Randall made her first career start at the libero position.
- Dunford topped the Golden Eagles in kills for the first time this season.
- The junior also recorded her 17th career double-digit kills performance.
- Rivas' 18 digs set a new career-high for the sophomore.
