#ORUVB Falls at Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – Despite a double-double from Kalena Vaivai, the Oral Roberts volleyball team fell on the road to Summit League foe Omaha in straight sets (20-25, 18-25, 17-25) Thursday evening inside Baxter Arena in Omaha, Nebraska. 

Vaivai logged her fourth double-double of the season as the senior dished out 18 assists to go along with a season-high and team-best 15 digs. The double-double marked the 14th of her ORU career.

Outside hitter Trinity Freeman topped the Golden Eagles in kills for the 11th straight match as the junior put down six on the night. Middle blocker Kedron Burk followed with five, while Thaynara de Jesus, Natassia Baptiste and Shelbi Steen each recorded four. 

In the opening set, the Golden Eagles raced out to a 7-2 start before the Mavericks battled back to even the score at 12-12. After Omaha built a 20-17 advantage, ORU registered three straight points to even the set at 20-20, forcing a Maverick timeout. Out of the stoppage, Omaha scored the final five points to take the set, 25-20.
 
The Golden Eagles started off strong in the second set, logging five of the first six points. With ORU leading 11-9, the Mavericks rattled off five of the next six points to take their first lead of the set, 14-12. Omaha later closed the game with a 6-2 stretch as they went on to win 25-18.

With the score even at 5-5 in the third, the Mavericks took control with a 10-2 run. Behind the serving of Freeman, the Golden Eagles battled back to within four, 18-14, behind a 5-1 stretch. During the run, Freeman logged two service aces. Omaha responded with six of the next seven points to take a 24-15 advantage. Despite logging two of the final three points, the Golden Eagles fell in the third, 25-17.

  • Freeman has now led the Golden Eagles in kills 14 times this season.
  • Vaivai logged her fourth double-digit dig performance of the year. 
  • Burk logged five kills on 11 swings for a .364 attack percentage.
  • Alaina Larson registered a match-high three service aces.
  • Baptiste logged a team-best three blocks on the night.
  • Libero Breanna Rivas totaled seven digs in the match.
