NORMAN, Okla. – The Oral Roberts women's basketball team dropped a road contest to Oklahoma, 74-103, on Sunday afternoon inside the Lloyd Noble Center.
Emily Robinson shined for the second game in a row as the freshman guard tallied a team-high 19 points on 7-14 shooting. Robinson notched 16 of her points in the second half alone and tagged on six rebounds, three of which came off the offensive glass.
Golden Eagle veterans
Hannah Cooper and
Ruthie Udoumoh followed Robinson as they each poured in 11 points of their own. In addition, Udoumoh gathered a game-high nine rebounds and collected three steals, while Cooper tallied a team-best three assists.
ORU began the game with high energy on both sides of the floor. After an OU layup opened the scoring, the Golden Eagles put together a quick 7-0 run to go up by five. Robinson put the exclamation point on the run taking the ball coast-to-coast and finished with a layup and the foul.
The Sooners responded with a run of their own, outscoring ORU 13-0 from the 6:47 to the 4:54 minute mark. Down 23-10 with three minutes to go in the first quarter, the Golden Eagles ended the period on a 10-2 scoring burst.
Ashlyn Sage started the run as she rattled in a three from the corner. Cooper followed with a midrange jump shot and layup on back-to-back Golden Eagle possessions. Sophomore guard
Taleyah Jones capped off the run scoring a layup and the foul with four second left in the quarter. Jones knocked down the free throw as ORU ended the period with momentum in its favor.
Jalei Oglesby cut the OU lead down to three with a layup to open the 2nd quarter, but the Sooners churned out a 9-0 run in response before Oglesby hit a jump shot in the paint to stop the bleed. Following another OU layup, forward
Sara Rodrigues stepped up at the top of the key and drained her first three of the season. The Sooners would convert in the paint one more time as ORU went into the media timeout down 38-27. Out of the timeout, Oglesby capitalized on an OU turnover and brought the Golden Eagles to within single digits. The Sooners utilized a Skylar Vann triple on the next possession to pull back ahead. OU went into the second half maintaining a safe distance with a 44-32 lead.
Robinson opened the third quarter looking to score and attacking the basket. She scored ORU's first six points of the second half by attacking the cup and converting on free throw attempts. The third quarter remained a back-and-forth battle as both teams traded baskets for the majority of the time. OU stringed together a 7-0 run from the 5:36 to the 4:23 minute mark before Robinson hit a pair of free throws and Sage knocked down her second three of the evening to bring ORU back within striking distance. Both teams traded buckets for the rest of the quarter as the Golden Eagles went into the 4th quarter down 69-57.
The Golden Eagles traded twos for threes after a back-and-forth flurry of point from both teams to start the final quarter of play. Starting at the 5:01 mark, OU went on a 20-6 run to finish the game secure the win. Payton Verhulst became the offensive catalyst for the Sooners during the last period as she went a perfect 5-5 from the field and notched 13 of her 32 points in the final quarter of play. OU poured on six three pointers on 66.7% shooting during the 4th as their offensive barrage proved to be too much to overcome.
