EDINBURG, Texas – The Oral Roberts women's basketball team fended off a late fourth quarter push by the UTRGV Vaqueros as the Golden Eagles earned their third win in a row on Wednesday afternoon from the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Emily Robinson and
Ruthie Udoumoh led the charge for ORU as the duo each scored a team-high 16 points.
Hannah Cooper (14) and
Gentry Baldwin (10) rounded out the double-digit scorers on the afternoon for the Golden Eagles.
Robinson continues to impress in her freshman campaign. She shot an efficient 7-of-12 from the field and 2-of-5 from long range. Robinson has now reached double-figure scoring in five consecutive games.
Udoumoh put together strong performances in back-to-back games for the Golden Eagles. Fresh off her first double-double of the season, Udoumoh followed it up with 16 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Udoumoh continues to be a dominant force in the paint on both sides of the ball for ORU.
Cooper showed off every aspect of her game in the win over UTRGV. The reigning Summit League Peak Performer of the Week filled the stat sheet notching 14 points and five assists while shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Baldwin had a breakout performance in her young Golden Eagle career. She scored a career-high 10 points while playing key minutes in the fourth quarter guarding UTRGV's Iyana Dorsey. Baldwin shot 2-of-5 from three while going 2-of-2 from the free throw line.
The Vaqueros came out firing in the first quarter of play. Both teams went back-and-forth during the first few minutes as UTRGV took an 11-10 lead into the first media timeout. From there the Vaqueros went on a 9-0 run in less than two minutes before a layup by Robinson calmed the storm. With four seconds left in the quarter, Cooper pulled down a missed layup from UTRGV and took it coast-to-coast and banked in a floater from just inside the three point line to beat the buzzer. Cooper's basket brought ORU within four as they went into the second quarter down 20-16.
The Golden Eagles ramped up their defensive intensity in the second period as they recorded five of their eight steals in this quarter alone.
Sara Rodrigues got things started in post as she knocked in a turnaround hook shot in ORU's first possession. Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket as the game was scoreless from the 7:53 mark all the way down to the 4:06 mark. Rodrigues ended the drought with a left wing pullup jumper. With 3:15 left to play,
Meghan Weinrich found Baldwin in transition as the freshman knocked down the right wing three for her first points of the afternoon. The Golden Eagles went into the locker room with a 28-27 edge after the ORU bench outscored UTRGV 11-7 in the quarter.
Entering the second half, Robinson sparked a quick 7-0 ORU run with a turnaround jumper that forced the Vaqueros to call a timeout less than two minutes into the quarter. A pair of Cooper free throws extended the run to nine before Dorsey hit a three at the 5:58 mark to get UTRGV back in the scoring column. The Golden Eagles began trading baskets with Dorsey on back-to-back possessions until the media timeout. The Golden Eagles closed out the quarter on a 13-6 run capped off by a buzzer beater from Udoumoh who sank a catch-and-shoot midrange shot off an inbounds pass from Cooper. ORU led 54-40 after 30 minutes of play.
Baldwin and
Jalei Oglesby hit jumpers on back-to-back possessions to begin the fourth quarter and give ORU a 19 point lead. Dorsey and the Vaqueros did not back down from the large deficit. UTRGV went on a 15-2 run from the 8:09 minute mark to the 3:48 mark. Cooper ended to Vaqueros run with an emphatic layup plus the foul as she gave ORU some breathing space again. UTRGV went on one more 6-0 burst before the Golden Eagles started breaking the press for easy layups and knocking down their free throws to keep the Vaqueros at bay and secure the 72-63 victory.
