Stahl Slam Pushes #ORUBase Past Texas State in Rubber Match, 8-4

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Holden Breeze and Drew Stahl homered as the Oral Roberts baseball team downed Texas State, 8-4, in the rubber match Sunday afternoon from Bobcat Ballpark. With the win, ORU has claimed its first two series of the 2023 season.

Caleb Isaacs picked up the win in relief as the junior tossed three scoreless innings and allowed only one Bobcat hit. The Edmond, Oklahoma, native also struck out three on the afternoon. Brooks Fowler got the start for ORU and allowed two runs over three innings of work to go along with five strikeouts. Evan Kowalski and Cade Denton each tossed a scoreless frame out of the bullpen.

Four different Golden Eagles registered a multi-hit performance as ORU totaled 11 hits on the afternoon. Stahl finished 2-for-5 at the dish and blasted a grand slam in the seventh for his first homer as a Golden Eagle.

For the third straight game, ORU found themselves in a 1-0 hole as Texas State struck first in the opening frame. Breeze answered for the Golden Eagles in the second as the redshirt junior launched a solo homer to left, marking his first long ball of the 2023 campaign. 

In the third, Jake McMurray put ORU in front, 2-1, with a sacrifice fly down the right-field line that allowed Mac McCroskey to score. Later in the frame, a Bobcat error allowed Jonah Cox to cross the plate as the Golden Eagles increased their advantage to 3-1.

The Bobcats responded an inning later with a solo homer off the bat of Ryder Hernandez, trimming the lead to 4-2.

Matt Hogan got the run back for ORU in the seventh with an RBI single to right-center. Following a Breeze walk to load the bases, Stahl broke the game open with a grand slam to left-center as ORU's lead bloomed to 8-2.

Texas State tacked on a run in the seventh and another in the ninth to make the final 8-4 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
