COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Justin Quinn hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the 13th and the Oral Roberts Baseball team picked up its sixth straight series win with an 8-4 victory over North Dakota State in the rubber match Sunday afternoon from Doc Ross Field.Â
The 13-inning marathon marked the longest of the season for the Golden Eagles, who are now 2-1 in extra-inning contests this season.
After Jake McMurray led off the 13th with a single, Quinn broke the 4-4 tie with a two-run blast to right. The long ball marked the second of the weekend for the senior and fifth of the campaign. On the ensuing pitch, Jonah Cox ripped a solo homer to left to push the ORU advantage to 7-4.Â
The back-to-back homers marked the first time the Golden Eagles accomplished the feat this season.Â
Later in the frame, Holden Breeze stretched the lead to 8-4 with a two-out RBI single to left that scored Matt Hogan, who reached on a walk. In the bottom half of the frame, Dalton Patten retired the side in order to pick up his first win as a Golden Eagle.Â
In the victory, the ORU bullpen was lights out as the trio of Jacob Widener, Cade Denton and Patten combined for eight scoreless frames and six strikeouts. The trio also held the Bison to only four hits in the eight innings.
Cox pushed his hitting streak to 24 games and finished a double shy of the cycle after going 3-for-6 at the dish. Breeze joined Cox with a three-hit performance as the redshirt junior went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a walk. Blaze Brothers rounded out the multi-hit performers for ORU with a 2-for-3 showing to go along with a game-high tying three RBI.
The Bison struck first in the opening frame, 3-0, courtesy of a three-run homer off the bat of James Dunlap.
Brothers delivered the response for ORU in the third as the redshirt senior belted a three-run homer to left to even the contest at 3-3. The long ball marked the 10th of the year for Brothers.
After a solo blast by Druw Sackett put the Bison back in front in the sixth, the Golden Eagles answered in the eighth as Quinn plated Brothers, who reached on a double, with an RBI groundout to level the game at 4-4.
ORU saw the potential go-ahead run reach second in the ninth, 11th and 12th innings but were unable to convert. A leadoff double in the 12th put the winning run on second for the Bison but Patten worked out of the jam to send the game to the 13th.
