STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oral Roberts baseball team opened its 30th NCAA Tournament appearance with a 6-4 victory over the No. 11 overall seed Oklahoma State Friday night in the Stillwater Regional from O'Brate Stadium. The win marked the Golden Eagles' first in an NCAA Regional since 2017, which also came against Oklahoma State.
With the victory, ORU has now toppled a No. 1 seed as a No. 4 in the opening round for the third time, which is the most in NCAA history since 1999. The Golden Eagles extended their winning streak, the nation's longest, to 19 games, which is tied for the most consecutive wins in program history during the NCAA Division I era (1978). Over its last 40 contests, ORU is 37-3.Â
Caleb Isaacs improved to 7-0 after tossing 4.1 innings in relief and striking out four. Closer Cade Denton, a Collegiate Baseball All-American, slammed the door shut for his 13th save of the season after working two innings and punching out five. Starter Jakob Hall tossed 2.2 scoreless frames and struck out two before his night was cut short due to an hour-long weather delay.Â
Mac McCroskey led the Golden Eagle offense with a 3-for-4 performance to go along with three RBI. Drew Stahl matched McCroskey with a 3-for-4 night at the dish and also plated a run. Center fielder Jonah Cox, a Collegiate Baseball First Team All-American, extended his hit streak to 42 games with a 2-for-3 performance and has hit safely in 57 of the 58 contests this year.Â
The Golden Eagles struck first in the third behind an RBI single from Justin Quinn, who went 2-for-5 on the night. After Cox reached on a single to load the bases, McCroskey drew an RBI bases-loaded walk to extend the advantage to 2-0.
Â
In the fifth, ORU loaded the bases with no outs and McCroskey came through with an RBI single to extend the lead, 3-0. Following a strikeout, Stahl drew an RBI bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0. Jacob Godman added to the advantage, 5-0, with an RBI single through the left side.
Â
The Cowboys responded in the bottom half of the frame with a two-run single to trim the lead to 5-2.
McCroskey answered for the Golden Eagles in the sixth with an RBI single up the middle that scored Cox, who reached on an infield single.
A pair of solo homers in the eighth by Oklahoma State cut the ORU advantage to 6-4.Â
After Denton allowed a leadoff walk in the ninth to bring up the tying run, the junior registered a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to seal the 6-4 victory for the Golden Eagles.Â
