TULSA, Oklahoma – The Oral Roberts baseball team secured the series win with a 6-2 victory over Southern Illinois on Sunday afternoon.
The game was tied at one after the first inning, as the Salukis opened the day with a third-pitch home run. ORU responded with an RBI single by
Makani Tanaka, driving in
Will Edmunson, who had reached on a single and moved into scoring position on a walk and a groundout.
The game remained scoreless over the next three innings, but the Golden Eagles took a one-run lead in the fifth on an RBI double by
Cooper Combs, scoring
Wailele Kane-Yates after he reached on a walk. SIU quickly answered with an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to even the game at two.
ORU reclaimed the advantage in the bottom of the sixth, starting as
Martell Davis drew a walk, followed by singles from Edmunson and
Cooper Kelly to load the bases. Davis scored on a wild pitch before Combs singled to left, driving in Edmunson. Tanaka added a single to center, bringing home Kelly and extending the lead to 5-2.
The Golden Eagles tacked on their final run in the eighth. Kane-Yates singled and advanced to third on Combs' second double of the day.
Keaton Campbell followed with an RBI groundout, scoring Kane-Yates to make it 6-2.
Braydon Sanford (1-0) earned the win in relief for ORU. The right-hander tossed 1.1 shutout innings, allowing one hit.
Conner Johnson made the start for the Golden Eagles, throwing 5.2 innings while allowing two runs, striking out two, and walking three.
Up Next
ORU remains at home for a midweek matchup against Missouri State on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before traveling to Abilene, Texas, for a three-game series at Abilene Christian beginning Friday, February 20.
